The 5th Borneo Extravaganza: Uniquely Kalimantan

By • Sep 28th, 2012• Category: Budget Travel Package & Interesting Places

For those who wish to explore the fascinating splendors of Borneo, The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy along with the four provincial governments in  Kalimantan will present the 5th Borneo Extravaganza at the Mal Taman Anggrek, West Jakarta from 19 to 21 Oktober 2012.

Featuring the theme “Unique Borneo”, the event presents the perfect opportunity to discover the many wonders in Kalimantan,  the Indonesian part of Borneo, – the 3rd largest island in the world – before venturing into its many destinations. The event will feature exhibitions from all four provinces in Kalimantan, namely:  West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan.

Among many other activities, the event will present various fascinating cultural attractions of the native Dayak ethnic group and Chinese descendants. A wonderful collection of Martapura Pearls of South Kalimantan will also be displayed during the event.

The second largest Island in Indonesia –  after Papua in eastern Indonesia  – ,  Indonesia’s Kalimantan offers many natural and cultural splendors. Its dense forests are an important part of the earth’s  global ecosystem and home to many fascinating creatures. Indonesia’s legendary Orangutans find shelter here in many of its National Parks including at Camp Leakey and the Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan, at the Kutai National Park in East Kalimantan, and at Nyaru Menteng in Central Kalimantan.

The seas surrounding Kalimantan also present their own unique beauty such as in the splendors of the Derawan Archipelago and Kakaban Island of East Kalimantan, while Lake Sentarum in West Kalimantan presents wonderful wildlife above and below the waters.

Culturally, Kalimantan is home to many of the Dayak ethnic sub-groups spread throughout the island. Some of their characteristics can be observed in Pontianak, capital of West Kalimantan, and their long houses by the Kapuas River, as well as in Palangkaraya, capital of Central Kalimantan.  North of Pontianak, is Singkawang, city of a thousands shrines where Chinese traditional culture continues to flourish and is well preserved.
