PT (Persero) Perusahaan Penerbangan Garuda Indonesia is the national airline of Indonesia. It is named after the mythical bird Garuda. In Indian Vedic tradition, Garuda is the carrier of the Hindu god Vishnu; a representation of Garuda appears in the coat of arms of Indonesia. The airline is based in Jakarta at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, with hubs at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali, Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, Polonia International Airport, Medan, Sepinggan International Airport, Balikpapan, and Singapore Changi Airport, Singapore. The airline flies to a number of destinations in South-East,East Asia, the Middle East and Australia. It also previously flew to several destinations in Europe. However, as of June 2008, Garuda, along with all Indonesian airlines, is banned from flying to the EU. It is wholly owned by the Indonesian Government and employs 6,285 staff (as of March 2007).

In-flight services

Garuda Indonesia is a full-service airline, in contrast with the ‘no frills’ low-cost carrier. The class configuration is divided into executive (business) and economy class. The airline lacks products often associated with the top international airlines, such as personal TV screens in all classes and business class seats which convert into beds. However, the introduction of such products may become viable in the coming years due to the recent restructuring and consolidation of the airline, which has delivered good profits in the first half of 2007.

Executive Class

Executive Class is available on board all Garuda Indonesia aircraft with seat pitch ranging from 41-58″. On selected aircraft, in-seat TVs are available. A range of hot and cold food and beverages is available, and snacks or meals are offered depending on the length of the flight. Fine wines are offered on international flights.

Economy Class

Similarly, Economy Class is available on board all Garuda Indonesia aircraft. Seat pitch ranges from 30-35″ depending on the aircraft. Hot and cold meals or snacks and beverages, are offered depending on the length of the flight. Fine wines are offered on international flights.

In-flight entertainment

In-flight entertainment is available on board selected aircraft. Airbus A330-300 and Boeing 747-400 aircraft feature cabin screens with Airshow, a moving map system to allow passengers to track the progress of their flight, as well as feature films and short movies. Audio programming is also available.

In addition, Garuda Indonesia ordered 10 Boeing 777-300ER and 50 Boeing 737-800 during the Singapore Airshow. These new aircraft will be fitted with a new in-flight entertainment program and a new cabin ambience.

Newspapers and magazines

Newspapers and magazines are provided to all passengers on board Garuda Indonesia flights free of charge. An in-flight magazine, Garuda In-Flight Magazine, is also available as free reading material.

Destinations

Garuda currently operates flights to a total of 43 destinations (23 domestic, 20 international) throughout East and South East Asia, Australia and the Middle East, with Australia and Japan being vital tourism markets.

Codeshare

Garuda Indonesia also offers flights to 13 other international destinations through code-share agreements with:
China Airlines
China Southern Airlines
Gulf Air
Hainan Airlines
Korean Air
Singapore Airlines
Malaysia Airlines
Philippine Airlines
Qatar Airways
SilkAir
Vietnam Airlines
Oman Air

Ticketing

A 24-hour call center is available for local customer access and is a means of booking flights since the airline’s website does not handle bookings. However, passengers from worldwide can also book all Garuda flights online via http://garuda-indonesia.co.uk. It is the airline’s official UK-website. The e-ticket system (using paperless or electronic tickets) has been introduced on all domestic flights and flights to Singapore originating from Jakarta. This system computerizes the ticketing method, in which a traditional paper ticket is no longer required.

Frequent flyer program

Garuda Frequent Flyer was launched in September 1999.In 2005, Garuda Indonesia relaunched its frequent flyer program called Garuda Frequent Flyer (GFF) with a new look, new benefits, and new services. The new program allows members to earn miles on domestic and international flights and has four tiers of membership covering GFF Junior, Blue, Silver, Gold, and Platinum benefit levels. New services for GFF members include a new website at http://gff.garuda-indonesia.com, including an on-line mileage calculator for earning and redemption, on-line mileage balance, on-line personal profile management, and downloadable forms.

Teluk Intan Leaning Tower

Malaysia boasts its own equivalent to the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, right here at the heart of the Teluk Intan town centre. Like its Italian counterpart, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan has a leftward slant, and all the ingredients to make it an architectural sight to behold. It is the pride of Teluk Intan or formerly known as Teluk Anson.

Standing at 25.5m tall, its construction appears to comprise of eight different levels but is actually divided into only three storeys. When it was first built, its structure was straight but it began to tilt about 1.8 metre towards Jalan Bandar between 1889 and 1895.

Teluk Intan Leaning Tower ( Menara Condong Teluk Intan )

This pagoda-like structure was built by a Chinese contractor, Leong Choon Choong, in 1885. Initially, it was used as a covered water tank to store water sufficient for 800 Teluk Intan residents at that time. During the Japanese Occupation, it was used as an observation post for the Japanese Army. Later, it became headquarters for the Boys Scouts.

These days, it just tells the time. Come Wednesdays, the clock tower’s caretaker will wind up the clock’s mechanism using a crank. Commissioned in London, the clock chimes twice every 15 minutes. The chimes can be heard as far as eight kilometres in radius especially at night.

To get to Teluk Intan from the North-South Expressway, exit at Bidor Interchange and proceed to the road leading to Teluk Intan. The Tower is easily accessible through Jalan Selat.

In Bukit Larut there are hundred & thousands of rare species of flora and fauna which you can hardly find anywhere else on this earth as it is not explored and contaminated by human development.

Gardens cultivated with care, cool and fresh air and the crystal clear water bring refreshment to your soul & body. The best part is the natural sounds made by nature when the cool air blow in the forest & the sound made by animals.

The hill abounds with groves of evergreens and vibrantly colored flora and fauna. Roses, dahlias, daisies, pansies, petunias, tulips, and marigolds abound in profusion. The cool climate also favors golden sunflowers with reputedly the largest variety in the country.

Midway to the top is the Tea Garden House that was once part of the tea-estate. The view at this point is magnificent and features the entire Taiping town as well as the Lake Gardens. Also visible are the suburbs of Aulong and Simpang and the 19km stretch of Taiping – Port Weld road.

Brief History: The cave was first identified in 1887 in the Map of Perak-Malay Peninsula, which indicated a mountain spelt as “Gunong Tempoo Rong”. The Department of Minerals and Geosciences estimated the age of the rock formations in the area of Gua Tempurung to be between 250 and 400 million years. The cave was also known locally as Gua Perah. Perah is a type of fruit similar to rubber seed. In the old days, there were many Perah trees near the cave. Before 1935, tin mining activities on small scale took place in the cave. During the World War 11 (1939 – 1945), the cave became a refuge for locals from the invading Japanese. The Malayan Emergency period (1948-1960) saw the cave being used by the communists as their hideout. The cave walls have hand drawn pictures and words by the communists. There are also inscription of hate slogans and song lyrics against the Japanese army. After the Emergency period, mining activities in the area resumed. In 1975, the Perak State Government appointed a cave researcher and enthusiast, J. Crowter of the German Society of Caving to carry out research on Gua Tempurung and to help turn it to become a recreation area and a tourist attraction. Circa 1994, the State Government carried out a feasibility study and in 1995, work to develop Gua Tempurung as a destination began in stages. The cave was open to the public in November 1997 and entrance fees were introduced and collected by a joint-venture company formed by Yayasan Perak and a private company, which managed and maintained the place as one of the state’s tourist attractions. In 2004, the State Government appointed APT Consortium Sdn Bhd to take over the management and maintenance of Gua Tempurung and the appointment remained valid till today. The cave continues to attract both locals and foreign tourists, with many coming from Europe, Australia, the United States, New Zealand, Singapore and other countries in the Asian region. The number of tourists has been increasingly steadily from more than 50,000 in 2005 to over 70,000 the following year.

Location: The cave is located in Lembah Tempurung (Tempurung Valley) near Gopeng, Perak, Malaysia. It is 25 km to the south of Ipoh, the capital of the state of Perak.

Exact Site: It is a massive cavern inside Gunung Tempurung (Tempurung Mountain) standing at 497 metres high. It is visible from the North-South Expressway near Gopeng.

Classification: Karst cave. It is a cave of marble limestone (calcite calcium) of the Kinta limestone type.

Cave Age: More than 400 million years old.

Cave Length: 1.9 km.

Cave Height: 120 metres.

Number of Domes: Five gigantic domes with ceilings resembling coconut shell (tempurung), hence its name Gua Tempurung. Gua is the Malay word for cave.

Galleries: The five domes form the showcase galleries beginning with Golden Flowstone Cavern, Gergasi (Giant) Cavern, Tin Mine Cavern, Alam (Universe) Cavern and Fallen Warrior and Battlefield Cavern.

Underground River: The river is called Sungai Gua Tempurung. The river passage runs about 1.6 km through the cave inside Gunung Tempurung.

The Sungei Palas Tea Centre – truly spectacular!

A definite must on the list of things to do in Cameron Highland is a visit to the new Sungei Palas Tea Centre.
Opened by BOH Plantations in 2005 at the Sungei Palas Tea Garden, it is just above Brinchang, in the very heart of the Cameron Highlands tea country.
Located on a hilltop, amidst rows of tea bushes and close to Gunung Brinchang, it offers the best possible introduction to Malaysian teas in a truly spectacular setting.
The Tea Centre is home to the Tea’ria a souvenir and tea shop as well as an exhibition area with comprehensive information about the tea manufacturing process.

OPEN DAILY EXCEPT MONDAY

The Sungei Palas Tea Centre is open daily – except Monday – from 9 a.m to 4.30 pm. Admission to the factory visit is free and information tour are conducted approximately every 30 minutes.

BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS

With the cool climate of the highlands, the tea centre is surrounded with blooms of red cannas, yellow lillies, blue agapanthus, colourful dwarf hibiscus and other blossoms, all contrasting with orderly green of the tea bushes and making the place a heaven for picture taking (but the flowers are not for picking!)

HOW TO GET THERE
