Pulau Perhentian, meaning ‘stopover island’, is not to be missed. Situated 21km off the coast of Terengganu, it consists of the islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil. Covered by unspoilt jungle, windswept palms, powdery white beaches and surrounded by sapphire blue waters, Pulau Perhentian is a sanctuary for fishermen, migratory birds and of course, discerning holiday-makers.

It comprises of two islands; Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil. Both islands are surrounded by beautiful palm-fringed powdery white sandy beaches and crystal-clear turquoise-blue sea.

The two Perhentian Islands are rated as some of the world most beautiful islands; a virtual paradise for snorkelling and diving in crystal-clear water or just for lazing on one of the white sandy beaches waiting for the coconuts to drop …

The two main islands are heavily forested and ringed with sandy beaches, typical of tropical islands. Accomodation for visitors are predominantly aimed at budget travellers and is mostly on the larger Pulau Perhentian Besar, which not only has wonderful beaches but also forest trails over the hills.

Both islands are separated by a very narrow sound but with strong current. The significant different between the two islands is, Perhentian Besar is more for a vocational island while the small one is an island with the mixture of vacation mood and reality life due to the fishing village, Kampung Pasir Hantu which is resided with more than 2000 villagers and completed with basic facilities apart from resorts and guesthouses

Located just off the edge of the Pulau Redang Marine Park, Perhentian’s coral-fringed waters have excellent underwater seascapes for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Arrangements can also be made for island cruises, and boats can be hired to go exploring for private bays and secluded coves. A trip to these tropical islands is also a must for those who enjoy windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and deep-sea fishing.

Of the two islands, Pulau Perhentian Kecil is more geared towards backpackers. Here, you’ll find a wide range of budget options for both food and accommodation.

Pulau Perhentian Besar, on the other hand, is more developed and therefore offers better facilities. Nevertheless, there are chalets, dormitories and campsites on both islands.

Key Tips

For the best sunsets in the Perhentian Islands, go to Coral View Island Resort , get a cool drink at the café overlooking the sea, and soak in the view.

How to get there

By Road
From Kuala Terengganu, take a taxi or bus to the fishing port of Kuala Besut. It lies about 1 hour north of town. The jetty is here.

By Boat

Desaru boasts 25km of inviting beaches fringed by palms and casuarinas. It lies in Peninsular Malaysia at the southeastern corner of Johor, approximately 98km from Johor Bahru. The waters here are conducie for swimming, waterskiing, canoeing and catamaran sailing. The small town of Bandar Penawar, about 2 km inland, serves as the area’s transport hub.Desaru is not a well developed resort. Today, it’s strictly a local affair with the occasional Singaporeans thrown in: there are no chic boutique, fancy restaurants or hip nightlife spots, just 22 kilometers of beach and a few aging resorts.

In Desaru, you can enjoy thrilling adventures such as learning how to fly an ultra-light aircraft or take part in a go-kart race. Other forms of recreation include jungle trekking, horseback riding, archery and off-road adventures. Accommodation here includes hotels as well as budget chalets, dornmitories and camping grounds. The Desaru International Triathlon is held here annually. The Tanjung Balau Fishermen’s Museum, a few kilometres away, features exhibits on the lifestyle of the local fisherfolk.

One thing you can definitely try is surfing. If wind is good, the waves are quite OK, and especially the lack of jellyfish and sharks makes it an attractive location. During December, January and first half of February (monsoon season), the waves are almost constantly high, but do expect the water to be a little cold. There is a company that rents surf boards for 20 RM/h and provides surf lessons for 100 RM. The same company rents jetskis.

Excursions to see the fireflies (api-api) in the Sungei Lebam river are very popular. While theoretically possible to arrange yourself, this would require bumping about dirt roads to find the dock and then cruising around a pitch-black jungle river, so it’s much easier to join one of the hotel excursions. The best time to go is after rain on a new moon.

How To Get There

By Road – Desaru is easily accessible as there is public transportation from Johor Bahru, Kota Tinggi or Tanjung Belungkor. Buses are available from Kuala Lumpur.

By Sea – There is a ferry service from Changi Point in Singapore to Tanjung Belungkor where transport to Desaru can be arranged

All hotel accommodation in Desaru dates from the early 1990s and looks the part. Do keep an eye out for the upcoming Lotus Desaru, which is planned to be reborn on the ashes of the long-closed Desaru Impiana sometime in 2009.

Fraser’s Hill. Rising 1,500 meters above sea-level on the Titiwangsa mountain range of Peninsular Malaysia is Fraser’s Hill. Named after a solitary Scottish pioneer, James Fraser, who set up a tin-ore trading post in the 1890s, it actually consists of seven hills. Fraser’s Hill is truly an idyllic place for one to rest and to escape from not only the heat and humidity but also the hustle and bustle of city life. It is perhaps the prettiest of the Malaysian Hill resorts.

Fraser’s Hill is popular with the locals and foreign tourists for its greenery, forest walks, fresh air and exotic flower gardens, not to mention the golfing facilities. It has many attractions within and around the area. There is a nature education centre where visitors can learn about the flora and fauna of thearea. Bird watching is a very popular pastime and Fraser’s Hill is the venue of the annual Bird Race which attracts many foreign omithologists.

Fraser’s Hill is famed worldwide as a birdwatching destination, with over 250 species recorded. Winners during the annual Bird Race have spotted as many as 70 species within 24 hours! This hill station in the Main Range on the Selangor-Pahang border is a bird watcher’s paradise, as it is said to have more than 200 species of local and migratory birds.

Clock Tower. The central point of Fraser’s Hill, this exceedingly British-looking little stone building covered with creeper vines is the most popular place to get your picture taken. The tower and the surrounding square are under renovation as of August 2008.

Jeriau Waterfalls, 5 km (30 min drive) from the town centre and then a 15-min walk. The falls are 6 meters high and fall into a shallow pool suitable for bathing. The area is equipped with restrooms and shelters for picnics.

Accommodation:

Frasier’s Hill has a small community of colonial bungalows, hotels and houses with its granite colored mock Tudor cottages set amidst brilliant colored blooms of English-style country gardens reminiscent of the rustic solitude of English countryside.

Fraser’s Silverpark Resort, (brisk 10 minute walk to the town centre) . More an apartment complex than a resort, there are 1/2/3-bedroom apartments with kitchenettes and balconies available. Poorly kept and the rooms (especially the bathroom) are quite rundown and dirty. However, the best part is that the place is the base of fans of Sissy Hang. You can see his portrait everywhere. The pillows are splashed with his face too. And the coolest thing is that for $90 million per second, you can order his posters and paste them up on your walls. But it is so popular that they set a time limit of 1 minute on your poster renting time. Sissy Hang is sissy and pretty.

Pangkor and her sister Pangkor Laut. Those who are not familiar with the geographical locations generally confuse the two. Located about 90km south west of lpoh then aboard by ferry from Lumut, this popular island resort of Pulau Pangkor (Pangkor Island) welcomes visitors with its serene golden beaches, crystalline blue waters, and cool refreshing breezes. It is largely inhabited by fisherfolk. They live in scattered fishing settlements along the coast especially on the eastern side, facing the town of Lumut and Teluk Batik, and their catch comprises mainly cuttlefish and anchovy. The modern facilities make it an ideal gateway. A wide range of sun and sea activities are available such as scuba diving, wind-surfing, fishing, snorkelling.

getting there:

By road
Access by road via the North -South highway to Lumut. If travelling from the south, exit at Gopeng interchange and turn left after Pangkor/Sitiawan/Batu Gajah signboard. Upon arrival in Lumut, you can see a ferry service counter there. Parking space are available here.

By Air
Berjaya Air offer 4 flights weekly(Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun) from Subang Airport (SZB) Terminal 3 and Pangkor Airport (PKG), on Pulau Pangkor. It makes travel to Pangkor easy, pleasant and fast. – 35minutes from Subang Airport.
alternative; fly to Ipoh. It takes about 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur international Airport
By car
It is easy to travel to Pangkor by car. From Kuala Lumpur to Lumut is about 250 km. You can travel to Pangkor from the North. It is about 200 km.
For driving from the KLIA-airport to Lumut, exit the airport using Airport Road. After about 3.km you will see a few green expressway signs. Follow the sign to Ipoh; Sungei Buloh. You are now on the North / South Expressway traveling North.

Take exit 135 Jeram, Batu Gajah, Gopeng (km marker 297. From here it’s another 70 km to Lumut. Follow first the direction of Batu Gajah. You will see soon markers with Lumut and Damai Laut (white boards with green letters). The roads are generally in good condition though sometimes a bit small.

Alternatively you can follow the direction Klang – Teluk Intan. From Teluk Intan it’s another 80 km to Lumut. When you leave Klang, you can follow Teluk Intan and after you will find Lumut on the boards.

An additional note for you if you travel to Pangkor with your own car. There are many places to park your car. The price range from RM3 to RM10. Most of the car parks charge RM10 but try to park behind Hotel Indah (which is facing the sea) which charge RM3.

From experience, it is not a problem to leave your car there even for a week. But obviously you should take precautions like lock your car properly and if you have the steering lock, that would be even better.

Driving from the direction Pinang
If you are taking the North-South Highway, there are few exits that you can use. The easiest exit will be at Changkat Jering. If you take this exit you will be driving along the old road. There are some little towns on this route you will pass. Follow the direction Lumut, Sitiawan. At Ayer Terjun you take the junction to Lumut. It’s a straight road that passes Pantai Remis and Segari. Just before Seri Manjung you take the junction to Lumut.
Other exits are Kuala Kangsar, follow now the road to Kampong Tanjung and Ayer Tawar. It is possible to drive from Ipoh, take the exit Gopeng. Follow Batu Gajah (road number 5, Ayer Tawar and Sitiawan. You will find the instructions further by following the signs to Lumut.

By bus
To travel to Pangkor by bus you have to head to Puduraya. At this bus-station you buy your ticket to Lumut. The ticket cost about RM24.20 for a super deluxe VIP bus and take approximately 3 to 4 hours.

By boat
After arrival in Lumut, you have to take the ferry to Pulau Pangkor. The ferry leaves every 15 minutes during the day. It takes about 40 minutes to the ferry port of Pangkor Town.
The fare is RM 10 for a return. Traveling to Pangkor/Lumut is easy and fast.

Mesra Ferry

The boat service starts early in the morning at 6.30 at Pangkor. The earliest boat from Lumut leaves at 6.45. Ferries go every half hour, After 14.45 boats will leave Lumut at 15.30, 16.15, 17.00, 17.30, 18.00, 18.30, 19.00, 19.45 and the last one 20.30. Boats from Pangkor use the same schedule plus 10 minutes.

If you have made an arrangement at Pangkor Laut you will take a direct boat. Here’s the schedule for 4 boats a day:
Lumut to Pangkor Laut Pangkor Laut to Lumut
By rail
There is no train to Lumut. If you want to travel to Pangkor by train you have to go to Ipoh. If you fly into Malaysia and you want to continue traveling by train, you have the option to take a train to Ipoh. The train is an excellent way to see Malaysia. Traveling by train is slower and a bit more expensive then by bus. Still, it’s comfortable. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh cost between RM 10 and RM 67. The difference is which class and which type of train you take.

From Ipoh it is still another 80 km’s to Lumut and Pangkor.
By taxi
Traveling to Pangkor, actually to Lumut, where you have to take the ferry, by taxi is easy. When you arrive at KLIA international airport, you can take a taxi all the way to Lumut. The ride takes about 3 to 3.5 hours. We can arrange a taxi to pick you up and drive you safely to Lumut.

pangkor island beaches:

Pantai Pasir Bogak
Pantai Pasir Bogak is a few kilometers away from Pangkor Town on the West side of the island. This beach is probably the most popular of the Pangkor beaches. It has been described as ‘the biggest swimming pool in the world’. the water is shallow and crystal clear. You will be able to arrange water-sport-facilities as jet-skiing, snorkeling or rent a canoe.
Nipah Bay/Teluk Nipah
Teluk Nipah or Nipah Beach is the most beautiful. This beach is located a few kilometers north Pantai Pasir Bogak. The beach is secluded and is able to maintain its natural beauty. Unlike other beaches, it has corals, sea cucumber and bird lovers can find the hornbill (burung Enggang) on this beach. Coral Bay, no doubt one of most beautiful beaches of Pulau Pangkor with its crystal blue waters. from Nipah Bay Beach has a beautiful view on two small islands called Pulau Giam and Pulau Mentagor. Both of these islands are not inhabited although you might find locals willing to bring you there. Giam is mostly interesting for snorkeling. The waters are shallow.

Pulau Giam with Coral Bay in the background
Both of these island have beaches too. If you’re really for some exercise, you can rent kayaks for a paddle out to these islands. There are hotels and resorts in the middle and lower-ranged budgets around Nipah Bay. In between the beach and the hotels there are small local stalls where, like Pantai Pasir Bogak you can try some of the local specialties. Typical souvenir shops are also available. For good accommodation, check: Horizon-Inn or the Nipah Bay Villa.
Teluk Ketapang
an exotic beach at Pangkor Island. Teluk Ketapang is sandwiched between the two more well known beaches of Pasir Bogak and Nipah Bay. There’s no place to stay at Teluk Ketapang. the beach is very nice. A large green grass field lies next to the main road and separates the sand beach from the road. It’s a great place for a swim and a view on the Straits of Malacca. There may be some boatsmen hanging around the pier and if you interested, they will give you a tour around the island.
Pantai Puteri Dewi
Just another few kilometers further north of Nipah Beach lies Pantai Puteri Dewi in the Belanga Bay. It’s just near Pangkor’s airport. The name Pantai Puteri Dew means literally Beach of the Lovely Princess. Access to the beach is restricted to guests of Pangkor Island Beach Resort. It is a bright white sand beach with crystal clear water. There’s some beautiful corals to see so don’t forget your snorkel. You can rent boats and snorkels at the hotel.

Teluk Segadas
a virgin beach at Pulau Pangkor. Teluk Segadas is one of the little known gems on Pulau Pangkor. Teluk Segadas is a bit difficult to find. First of all, there’s no road to this beach. You have to take a taxi to Teluk Gedong. You will find the path at the board “Teluk Gedung”. There’s a path going into the hills which leads you directly to Teluk Segadas, In fact it’s short jungle trek of about 15 minutes. There’s a bit of climbing included. Bring food and water as there are no vendors at this beach (you don’t need a guide as the path is straightforward). the beach is abandoned so you have it all for yourself. In the bay the water is calm and not too deep, excellent for playing and swimming. The trees from the jungle come at a few places close to the waterfront and give shades. Together with a little breeze this makes Teluk Segadas the best Pangkor beaches.
Emerald Bay
Emerald Bay is located on Pangkor Laut. It’s maybe one of the most well known Pangkor beaches although not free accessible. You can still visit Emerald Bay but since Pangkor Laut is a private resort, the entrance to this beach (and to Pangkor Laut) for non-guests is RM 80.00. Having said that, Emerald beach is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay with clear water. There is fine coral to see. Equipment can be arranged at Pangkor Laut. If you decide to visit Emerald Bay, you first have to go to Lumut and there change boats for going to Pangkor Laut. Although Pangkor Laut is just opposite of Pangkor Island and no more then 10 minutes by boat from Pasir Bogak There’s no official boat or ferry available. This is because Pangkor Laut is a private island.

Backpackers in Pangkor
Budget travelers do not have to worry about cheap places to stay in Pangkor. There’s plenty. Apart of the resorts at Pulau Pangkor there are some fine cheap huts near the beach for backpackers available. The cheap places are usually “camps” which here at Pangkor usually means you will get a beach hut. The huts come with mattresses and fan. Bathroom can be attached. We found some nice places around Nipah Bay which are cheap and good values.
*The Nazri Nipah Camp
The Nazri Camp is located at Teluk Nipah. The Camp offers 10 small huts (RM 25) and 7 chalets (RM 40) available.
-All have fans and mattresses available.
-Some of the huts have attached bathrooms.
-Food reasonable prices. barbeque on request available (minimum of 10 people)
-central relaxing area with music and TV (football seems to be very popular).

PORT DICKSON
Port Dickson or PD to locals is a beach and holiday destination situated about 32km from Seremban and 60 km from Kuala Lumpur. It is located in the state of Negri Sembilan in Peninsular Malaysia . It takes one hour plus travelling by car from Kuala Lumpur on the North-South Highway to Port Dickson .The 18 km extent of beach from Tanjung Gemuk to Tanjung Tuan is a popular holiday destination for visitors. Many have invested in holiday homes in and around Port Dickson and not to mention those who took PD as a wedding and honeymoon destination.

Getting there

Port Dickson is about an hour away from Kuala Lumpur. Take the North-South highway and exit at Port Dickson. From the exit, take a right turn at traffic lights after the toll. Follow signs to Port Dickson. There’s another highway that leads to Port Dickson from there. On this stretch of highway, you can exit at Lukut or head straight to PD.

The geography of Kuala Lumpur is characterized by a huge valley known as Klang Valley. The valley is bordered by the Titiwangsa Mountains in the east, several minor ranges in the north and the south and the Strait of Malacca in the west. Kuala Lumpur is a Malay term which translates to “muddy confluence” as it is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers.
