The fragrance from the garlands of flowers at the row of six stalls on Jalan Kapitan Keling here have never failed to attract the attention of those who passes through this Georgetown heritage spot.

But the ‘bunga malai’ or flower garlands have also pulled in the foreign tourists who are vacationing in this ‘pearl of the orient’.

The six flower garland stalls at Jalan Kapitan Keling begin their daily business as early as 6.30am, where suppliers deliver baskets of fresh flowers from Cameron Highlands, Bukit Bendera and Sungai Petani.

For stall owner Ameer Sultan Abdul Razak, 59, the fragrance of the fresh flowers, including jasmines, roses and orchids, is invigorating enough to make him start work at 7am.

When met by Bernama, Ameer said he takes some 20 minutes to one hour to make a flower garland depending on its size and floral arrangement.

“The bunga malai is used by Hindu devotees for their prayers in the temples. It is also to honour guests and dignitaries apart from as the mark of respect during the cremation ceremony for Indians,” he said.

BUNGA MALAI

The bunga malai is an important element in the culture of Malaysian Indians. It is used, among else, for prayers, weddings, and welcoming ceremony for distinguished visitors.

The flowers are joined to make a garland using fine strings derived from the banana stem. The garlands are made according to the orders that in turn depend on the nature of ceremony.

During the 40 years that Ameer operates his family business at Jalan Kapitan Keling, he has ‘woven’ various varieties of flower garlands, a skill which he learnt from his father.

He said each of the flower garlands is sold at between RM3 and RM50 depending on its size and so far the most expensive garland ordered was priced at RM500.

According to Ameer, he could sell up to 10 flower garlands a day, operating from 7am until 9pm. The rest of the flowers are kept in special refrigerators to ensure their freshness.

“Maybe to Malaysians, the bunga malai is nothing extra ordinary but foreigners have shown interest in how to make the flower garlands.

“My stall continues to receive a stream of foreign visitors who are attracted not only to the flower fragrance and colours but also on the unique flower garlands. Some even take the opportunity for their pictures to be snapped with them wearing the garlands,” he said.

MONEY FOR FOREIGN WORKERS

The flower garland business is also ‘money’ for foreign workers who are skilled in making the bunga malai, particularly those from India.

For 43-year Indian national P. Segar, the stringing method in making bunga malai is the same when compared to that in India.

“It takes me only 20 minutes to string a one metre-long bunga malai”, said Segar who is an employee of one of the bunga malai stalls at Jalan Kapitan Keling.

Travellers from Perak can get to Tasik Pergau via the East-West Link from Gerik to Jeli while those from Kota Baharu can move down to Jeli in order to reach the lake.It is not that difficult to get to the jetty at Tasik Pergau, which is located a mere 500 metres from the main road.
Apart from the immense flora and fauna found on both islands, the other similarity is that the two lakes are man-made lakes, due to the construction of the respective hydroelectric dams at Temenggor and Pergau. The lakes enchanting natural beauty has never failed to draw visitors not only from neighbouring nations like Singapore and Thailand, but those from as far as Europe and Japan. Peace and tranquility at Tasik Pergau tempts tourists to spend their vacation there and there are reports that the lake has being a regular annual stopover for many of the foreign visitors.
The lake promises unforgetful sojourns for visitors. The Pergau Lake Sanctuary Park, measuring 460 hectares in area, and about 100 km from Jeli town, promises every visitor a memorable holiday experience. It is also a popular spot among fishing enthusiasts, offering a variety of catch and the place also offers a pleasant environment apart from providing the opportunity of seeing a mist filled lake. For angling enthusiasts, Tasik Pergau is teeming with freshwater fish like lampam (carp), tilapia and toman (snakehead) among others thriving in its waters.  Visitors can rent a boat to explore the islands within the lake while searching for the best fishing spot. The boat ride also provides a closer look at the natural panorama, and the unique flora and fauna. Going along the lakes banks, visitors can glimpse mammals like deers coming down to the waters edge.

Surrounded by lush and world’s olderst green rainforests, said to be older that found at the Amazon basin in Brazil, the lake offers unique experience for its visitors. At night, the temperature at Pergau lake can dip to as low as 18 degrees Celsius, similar to that at the Cameron Highlands.Tasik Pergau also serves as an avenue for a good night rest. There are no problems for accommodation as the Kelantan Selatan Development Authority (Kesedar) provides chalets for visitors who wish to spend the night at the lakeside. visitors can spend a night at the lakes resort that also provides facilities for seminars and courses.The resort can accommodate 100 lodgers at any particular time. Among the facilities available at the Kesedar resort are six floating chalets as well as a surau, tents, hostel, dining hall and shower rooms.  With only RM70, including the cost of renting a boat, visitors can put up in the floating chalets developed by South Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar). There are also 30 campsites for the more adventurous ones who want to get a feel of the cold nights in the open. Visitors can also try kayak rides for a fee of RM20 for two persons or may opt for jungle trekking accompanied by a guide.

fishing at the chalets is an experience to consider for angling enthusiasts. A kitchen provided for each of the chalets. Anglers can grill the freshly caught fish there. The resort also provides the services of a cook based on demand. Otherwise the visitors will have to prepare their own food, visitors are advised to bring their own supply of food, which is enough for the duration of their stay at the resort.

One of the wonders of Malaysia, Cameron Highlands is the largest and most famous hill resort in the country. This highland paradise still retains much of the charm of an English village. Cameron Highlands is the smallest district in the state of Pahang which is located in the north-western corner of the state. Cameron Highlands is made up of 3 main townships at different elevations. RINGLET – This is the first town you will reach if you are taking the old road (Tapah / Cameron Highlands). Ringlet is one of the main agricultural hubs in the highlands. If you’re driving via the old road from Tapah, this is the first town you will see when you reach Cameron Highlands. Located at an elevation of 1,200 metres above sea-level, Ringlet is one of the main agricultural hub for the highlands. Bertam Valley which is located about 5km away is one of the main flower and vegetable producers in Cameron highlands. You wont find any hotels here in Ringlet. The nearest hotel is the LakeHouse which is less then 10 minutes away. This is also the place to fill up on fuel if you’re low on supply

BERTAM VALLEY – Located about 3km away from Ringlet, is one of the main flower and vegetable producers in Cameron Highlands.  Bertam Valley is one of hub of Malaysia’s local vegetable farm and international flower farm such as Roses & Chrycentimum 
 

TANAH RATA – This is the administrative hub of Cameron Highlands where most of the government offices are located. The main bus station is also located here. Money changers, internet cafes and most of the tour desks can be found here. Most of the chalets and guest houses are located within the vicinity of the town.Tanah Rata is one of the major hub in Cameron Highland whereas it seats several hotels, parks and comercial centre. Main attraction in Tanah Rata is the Mardi Plantation Centre and it’s business centre. Several high-class shops have been opened in the town including Starbucks Coffee. There is also a budget traditional Malay Kampung Homestay located at Kampung Taman Sedia.

BRINCHANG – Brinchang is about 10 minutes drive from Tanah Rata. This is where you will find most of the smaller hotels and food outlets.. There are a few tourist attractions located within walking distance from the town and the famous ‘Pasar Malam’ (Night Market) is also located here. This town can get really crowded during the peak holiday season.  Brinchang currently is the biggest town in Cameron Highland. It seats several hotels, night markets, military camps, public service and comercial centre.

KEA FARM – Located about 4km away from Brinchang, most of the tourist spots are found in and around Kea Farm. This is where you will find flower nurseries, butterfly gardens and the Kea Farm Day Market where you can buy vegetables, flowers and fruits.
TRINGKAP, KUALA TERLA & KG. RAJA – Heading north on the main road, you will pass the other smaller towns of the highlands. Tringkap and Kuala Terla are a small farming community where you can find small stalls along the road selling local produce. Further up is Kampung Raja which is the last town on the map. From here, you can go to Ipoh (Perak) or Gua Musang (Kelantan).Tringkap is well-known for it’s popular business centre where most people can get fresh vegetable, fruit and flowers here arrived daily and fresh from the farms.

Kampung Raja is the rural area in the Cameron Highland whereas it seats only residence zone and several comercial zone.

Blue Valley is well-known for it’s tea plantation that are ranked as one of the best in Malaysia. A few to be named are, Blue Valley Tea Plantation and BOH Tea Plantation

Getting Here and Around 

Getting To Cameron Highlands 
The only way to get to Cameron Highlands is by road.
*Self drive

-from the east coast via Gua Musang in Kelantan but take note that this road has yet to be gazetted by the authorities.

-From the South via Tapah

Cameron Highlands is about 300kms from Kuala Lumpur ( less than 3.5 hours) via the North-South Expressway (NSE).
If you are driving from Kuala Lumpur, get find your way to the NSE by following the sign to Ipoh.
Once you’re on the expressway, keep on driving north until you reach Tapah which will take about 1.5 hours.
Watch out for the sign that indicates the Tapah and Cameron Highlands exit (Exit 132).
Once you have passed the toll booth, turn left at the traffic lights.
From here onwards you will be on the long winding road to Cameron Highlands which is about 60 km’s away.

-From the north via Simpang Pulai / Ipoh

Now that the new road from Simpang Pulai is open, more people are traveling to the highlands via this route. The road condition is much better here than the Tapah route and it only takes about 45 minutes to get to Kampung Raja from Simpang Pulai.
Take Exit 137 (Simpang Pulai) and turn right at the traffic light right after the toll booth. Turn right again at the next traffic light about 200 metres away. You are now on the way to Cameron Highlands. Eventually you will see signs to Kampung Raja or Cameron Highlands along the way.  After about 1 hour, you will reach the Kampung Raja junction where you will have to turn right from the new road into Kampung Raja town. You’re now in Cameron Highlands and you can just follow the main road to your destination. Brinchang & Tanah Rata is about 25-30kms from here.

*Taxi
Taxis from Kuala Lumpur are available at the Pudu Raya Terminal. There are also daily taxi services from Tapah and Ipoh to Cameron Highlands. For services from other locations, please check with the local taxi terminal.
Visitors coming from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will be able to get a taxi from the KLIA limousine service (normal taxi) but the cost will be higher.

*Bus
Buses to Cameron Highlands operate daily from Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang. Buses from Kuala Lumpur depart from the Pudu Raya Station and KL Central. Buses from Penang depart from Prangin Mall / Komtar. Express bus service from Singapore is now available. Unititi Express leaves Beach Road Singapore at 10.00pm daily and arrives in Cameron at 7am the following morning.
Getting Around Cameron Highlands- 
It will be very convenient for you to get around Cameron Highlands if you have your own transportation. There are no car rental services in Cameron Highlands. You can still get around with the local bus and taxi, but you will not have the flexibility you get from driving in your own car. Alternately you can also get on one of the many tours organized by the local tour companies in Cameron Highlands. Some guest houses do provide motorbike rental services which you can use to get around. Bicycles are not here popular because of the terrain and the high traffic.
