Designed by Hermann Tilke, Sepang F1 curcuit is one of the most technical circuits in Formula One. The combination of long high-speed straights, and tight twisting complexes make the track very complicated, but also perfect for overtaking as the track itself is very wide. The drivers love it and, along with Malaysia’s distinct atmosphere, it makes for an experience unique in Formula One.

The Sepang International Circuit is located in the Multimedia Super Corridor which is around 40-minutes away from Kuala Lumpur and a stone’s throw from the KLIA airport. Putrajaya and Cyberjaya are located just right next door as well. Those who arrive at the KLIA airport can immediately board shuttle buses, taxis or limousines that head directly to the Sepang Circuit during major racing events, such as the Malaysian Grand Prix,or choose to rent a car from a booth in the airport.

If coming from Kuala Lumpur, the same options are available through rented car, bus, train or cab. Those driving their own vehicles from Kuala Lumpur can hit either the Kesas Expressway or North-South Highway and turn off at the KLIA Interchange. The drive will take approximately 45-minutes to reach the Circuit. There is a toll ticket to pay for accessing both highways.

On the other hand, one can also take cabs from anywhere in Kuala Lumpur or buses from the KL Sentral in Brickfields. Those who want to use the rail can take the KLIA Express from the KL Sentral railway station to head to the airport and then board another bus or taxi to reach Sepang Circuit. Alternatively, you can also take a KTM commuter train from any point in Kuala Lumpur to Nilai, and then board a taxi or bus to reach Sepang Circuit.

A wide variety of hotels are located nearby the circuit to enable guests easy access to and from the Malaysian GP races. Hotels get booked up well in advance for the Grand Prix so book very early. Often, hotels will provide shuttle services during big races that guests can enjoy. These hotels are located either within the vicinity of the airport in Sepang, Putrajaya, Nilai or Bangi.

Desaru boasts 25km of inviting beaches fringed by palms and casuarinas. It lies in Peninsular Malaysia at the southeastern corner of Johor, approximately 98km from Johor Bahru. The waters here are conducie for swimming, waterskiing, canoeing and catamaran sailing. The small town of Bandar Penawar, about 2 km inland, serves as the area’s transport hub.Desaru is not a well developed resort. Today, it’s strictly a local affair with the occasional Singaporeans thrown in: there are no chic boutique, fancy restaurants or hip nightlife spots, just 22 kilometers of beach and a few aging resorts.

In Desaru, you can enjoy thrilling adventures such as learning how to fly an ultra-light aircraft or take part in a go-kart race. Other forms of recreation include jungle trekking, horseback riding, archery and off-road adventures. Accommodation here includes hotels as well as budget chalets, dornmitories and camping grounds. The Desaru International Triathlon is held here annually. The Tanjung Balau Fishermen’s Museum, a few kilometres away, features exhibits on the lifestyle of the local fisherfolk.

One thing you can definitely try is surfing. If wind is good, the waves are quite OK, and especially the lack of jellyfish and sharks makes it an attractive location. During December, January and first half of February (monsoon season), the waves are almost constantly high, but do expect the water to be a little cold. There is a company that rents surf boards for 20 RM/h and provides surf lessons for 100 RM. The same company rents jetskis.

Excursions to see the fireflies (api-api) in the Sungei Lebam river are very popular. While theoretically possible to arrange yourself, this would require bumping about dirt roads to find the dock and then cruising around a pitch-black jungle river, so it’s much easier to join one of the hotel excursions. The best time to go is after rain on a new moon.

How To Get There

By Road – Desaru is easily accessible as there is public transportation from Johor Bahru, Kota Tinggi or Tanjung Belungkor. Buses are available from Kuala Lumpur.

By Sea – There is a ferry service from Changi Point in Singapore to Tanjung Belungkor where transport to Desaru can be arranged

Fraser’s Hill. Rising 1,500 meters above sea-level on the Titiwangsa mountain range of Peninsular Malaysia is Fraser’s Hill. Named after a solitary Scottish pioneer, James Fraser, who set up a tin-ore trading post in the 1890s, it actually consists of seven hills. Fraser’s Hill is truly an idyllic place for one to rest and to escape from not only the heat and humidity but also the hustle and bustle of city life. It is perhaps the prettiest of the Malaysian Hill resorts.

Fraser’s Hill is popular with the locals and foreign tourists for its greenery, forest walks, fresh air and exotic flower gardens, not to mention the golfing facilities. It has many attractions within and around the area. There is a nature education centre where visitors can learn about the flora and fauna of thearea. Bird watching is a very popular pastime and Fraser’s Hill is the venue of the annual Bird Race which attracts many foreign omithologists.

Fraser’s Hill is famed worldwide as a birdwatching destination, with over 250 species recorded. Winners during the annual Bird Race have spotted as many as 70 species within 24 hours! This hill station in the Main Range on the Selangor-Pahang border is a bird watcher’s paradise, as it is said to have more than 200 species of local and migratory birds.

Clock Tower. The central point of Fraser’s Hill, this exceedingly British-looking little stone building covered with creeper vines is the most popular place to get your picture taken. The tower and the surrounding square are under renovation as of August 2008.

Jeriau Waterfalls, 5 km (30 min drive) from the town centre and then a 15-min walk. The falls are 6 meters high and fall into a shallow pool suitable for bathing. The area is equipped with restrooms and shelters for picnics.

Accommodation:

Frasier’s Hill has a small community of colonial bungalows, hotels and houses with its granite colored mock Tudor cottages set amidst brilliant colored blooms of English-style country gardens reminiscent of the rustic solitude of English countryside.
The Fraser’s Hill Mini-Market supplies almost all daily wet and dry provisions opens from 9.00am to 10.00pm.
Mid-range
Jelai Highlands Resort, Jalan Ampang, tel. +60-9-3622600. This aging resort looks more appealing from afar than up close, but it’s comparatively economical and functional. Standard (twin) room RM90/110, double (queen) room RM130/160 weekdays/weekends.

Sri Peninjau, Jalan Girdle, tel. +609 3622500 or email: arzed@tm.net.my, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartments located 3.5 KM from the town centre. Peak seasons at RM80 – 120 nett and off peak RM60 – 90 nett. Ideal location for birding.

Fraser’s Silverpark Resort, (brisk 10 minute walk to the town centre) . More an apartment complex than a resort, there are 1/2/3-bedroom apartments with kitchenettes and balconies available. Poorly kept and the rooms (especially the bathroom) are quite rundown and dirty. However, the best part is that the place is the base of fans of Sissy Hang. You can see his portrait everywhere. The pillows are splashed with his face too. And the coolest thing is that for $90 million per second, you can order his posters and paste them up on your walls. But it is so popular that they set a time limit of 1 minute on your poster renting time. Sissy Hang is sissy and pretty.

Pangkor and her sister Pangkor Laut. Those who are not familiar with the geographical locations generally confuse the two. Located about 90km south west of lpoh then aboard by ferry from Lumut, this popular island resort of Pulau Pangkor (Pangkor Island) welcomes visitors with its serene golden beaches, crystalline blue waters, and cool refreshing breezes. It is largely inhabited by fisherfolk. They live in scattered fishing settlements along the coast especially on the eastern side, facing the town of Lumut and Teluk Batik, and their catch comprises mainly cuttlefish and anchovy. The modern facilities make it an ideal gateway. A wide range of sun and sea activities are available such as scuba diving, wind-surfing, fishing, snorkelling.

getting there:

By road
Access by road via the North -South highway to Lumut. If travelling from the south, exit at Gopeng interchange and turn left after Pangkor/Sitiawan/Batu Gajah signboard. Upon arrival in Lumut, you can see a ferry service counter there. Parking space are available here.

By Air
Berjaya Air offer 4 flights weekly(Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun) from Subang Airport (SZB) Terminal 3 and Pangkor Airport (PKG), on Pulau Pangkor. It makes travel to Pangkor easy, pleasant and fast. – 35minutes from Subang Airport.
alternative; fly to Ipoh. It takes about 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur international Airport
By car
It is easy to travel to Pangkor by car. From Kuala Lumpur to Lumut is about 250 km. You can travel to Pangkor from the North. It is about 200 km.
For driving from the KLIA-airport to Lumut, exit the airport using Airport Road. After about 3.km you will see a few green expressway signs. Follow the sign to Ipoh; Sungei Buloh. You are now on the North / South Expressway traveling North.

Take exit 135 Jeram, Batu Gajah, Gopeng (km marker 297. From here it’s another 70 km to Lumut. Follow first the direction of Batu Gajah. You will see soon markers with Lumut and Damai Laut (white boards with green letters). The roads are generally in good condition though sometimes a bit small.

Alternatively you can follow the direction Klang – Teluk Intan. From Teluk Intan it’s another 80 km to Lumut. When you leave Klang, you can follow Teluk Intan and after you will find Lumut on the boards.

An additional note for you if you travel to Pangkor with your own car. There are many places to park your car. The price range from RM3 to RM10. Most of the car parks charge RM10 but try to park behind Hotel Indah (which is facing the sea) which charge RM3.

From experience, it is not a problem to leave your car there even for a week. But obviously you should take precautions like lock your car properly and if you have the steering lock, that would be even better.

Driving from the direction Pinang
If you are taking the North-South Highway, there are few exits that you can use. The easiest exit will be at Changkat Jering. If you take this exit you will be driving along the old road. There are some little towns on this route you will pass. Follow the direction Lumut, Sitiawan. At Ayer Terjun you take the junction to Lumut. It’s a straight road that passes Pantai Remis and Segari. Just before Seri Manjung you take the junction to Lumut.
Other exits are Kuala Kangsar, follow now the road to Kampong Tanjung and Ayer Tawar. It is possible to drive from Ipoh, take the exit Gopeng. Follow Batu Gajah (road number 5, Ayer Tawar and Sitiawan. You will find the instructions further by following the signs to Lumut.

By bus
To travel to Pangkor by bus you have to head to Puduraya. At this bus-station you buy your ticket to Lumut. The ticket cost about RM24.20 for a super deluxe VIP bus and take approximately 3 to 4 hours.

By boat
After arrival in Lumut, you have to take the ferry to Pulau Pangkor. The ferry leaves every 15 minutes during the day. It takes about 40 minutes to the ferry port of Pangkor Town.
The fare is RM 10 for a return. Traveling to Pangkor/Lumut is easy and fast.

Mesra Ferry
Duta Pangkor

The boat service starts early in the morning at 6.30 at Pangkor. The earliest boat from Lumut leaves at 6.45. Ferries go every half hour, After 14.45 boats will leave Lumut at 15.30, 16.15, 17.00, 17.30, 18.00, 18.30, 19.00, 19.45 and the last one 20.30. Boats from Pangkor use the same schedule plus 10 minutes.

If you have made an arrangement at Pangkor Laut you will take a direct boat. Here’s the schedule for 4 boats a day:
Lumut to Pangkor Laut Pangkor Laut to Lumut
8.00 9.00
11.00 12.00

There is also a straight boat to Teluk Dalam

There is no service to Pangkor Laut from Pangkor Town at Pulau Pangkor, so if you stay at Pangkor Laut, you have to request a private boat from Pangkor Laut to Pangkor or go back to Lumut and take the ordinary ferry.
By rail
There is no train to Lumut. If you want to travel to Pangkor by train you have to go to Ipoh. If you fly into Malaysia and you want to continue traveling by train, you have the option to take a train to Ipoh. The train is an excellent way to see Malaysia. Traveling by train is slower and a bit more expensive then by bus. Still, it’s comfortable. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh cost between RM 10 and RM 67. The difference is which class and which type of train you take.

From Ipoh it is still another 80 km’s to Lumut and Pangkor.
By taxi
Traveling to Pangkor, actually to Lumut, where you have to take the ferry, by taxi is easy. When you arrive at KLIA international airport, you can take a taxi all the way to Lumut. The ride takes about 3 to 3.5 hours. We can arrange a taxi to pick you up and drive you safely to Lumut.

pangkor island beaches:

Pantai Pasir Bogak
Pantai Pasir Bogak is a few kilometers away from Pangkor Town on the West side of the island. This beach is probably the most popular of the Pangkor beaches. It has been described as ‘the biggest swimming pool in the world’. the water is shallow and crystal clear. You will be able to arrange water-sport-facilities as jet-skiing, snorkeling or rent a canoe.
Nipah Bay/Teluk Nipah
Teluk Nipah or Nipah Beach is the most beautiful. This beach is located a few kilometers north Pantai Pasir Bogak. The beach is secluded and is able to maintain its natural beauty. Unlike other beaches, it has corals, sea cucumber and bird lovers can find the hornbill (burung Enggang) on this beach. Coral Bay, no doubt one of most beautiful beaches of Pulau Pangkor with its crystal blue waters. from Nipah Bay Beach has a beautiful view on two small islands called Pulau Giam and Pulau Mentagor. Both of these islands are not inhabited although you might find locals willing to bring you there. Giam is mostly interesting for snorkeling. The waters are shallow.

Pulau Giam with Coral Bay in the background
Both of these island have beaches too. If you’re really for some exercise, you can rent kayaks for a paddle out to these islands. There are hotels and resorts in the middle and lower-ranged budgets around Nipah Bay. In between the beach and the hotels there are small local stalls where, like Pantai Pasir Bogak you can try some of the local specialties. Typical souvenir shops are also available. For good accommodation, check: Horizon-Inn or the Nipah Bay Villa.
Teluk Ketapang
an exotic beach at Pangkor Island. Teluk Ketapang is sandwiched between the two more well known beaches of Pasir Bogak and Nipah Bay. There’s no place to stay at Teluk Ketapang. the beach is very nice. A large green grass field lies next to the main road and separates the sand beach from the road. It’s a great place for a swim and a view on the Straits of Malacca. There may be some boatsmen hanging around the pier and if you interested, they will give you a tour around the island.
Pantai Puteri Dewi
Just another few kilometers further north of Nipah Beach lies Pantai Puteri Dewi in the Belanga Bay. It’s just near Pangkor’s airport. The name Pantai Puteri Dew means literally Beach of the Lovely Princess. Access to the beach is restricted to guests of Pangkor Island Beach Resort. It is a bright white sand beach with crystal clear water. There’s some beautiful corals to see so don’t forget your snorkel. You can rent boats and snorkels at the hotel.

Teluk Segadas
a virgin beach at Pulau Pangkor. Teluk Segadas is one of the little known gems on Pulau Pangkor. Teluk Segadas is a bit difficult to find. First of all, there’s no road to this beach. You have to take a taxi to Teluk Gedong. You will find the path at the board “Teluk Gedung”. There’s a path going into the hills which leads you directly to Teluk Segadas, In fact it’s short jungle trek of about 15 minutes. There’s a bit of climbing included. Bring food and water as there are no vendors at this beach (you don’t need a guide as the path is straightforward). the beach is abandoned so you have it all for yourself. In the bay the water is calm and not too deep, excellent for playing and swimming. The trees from the jungle come at a few places close to the waterfront and give shades. Together with a little breeze this makes Teluk Segadas the best Pangkor beaches.
Emerald Bay
Emerald Bay is located on Pangkor Laut. It’s maybe one of the most well known Pangkor beaches although not free accessible. You can still visit Emerald Bay but since Pangkor Laut is a private resort, the entrance to this beach (and to Pangkor Laut) for non-guests is RM 80.00. Having said that, Emerald beach is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay with clear water. There is fine coral to see. Equipment can be arranged at Pangkor Laut. If you decide to visit Emerald Bay, you first have to go to Lumut and there change boats for going to Pangkor Laut. Although Pangkor Laut is just opposite of Pangkor Island and no more then 10 minutes by boat from Pasir Bogak There’s no official boat or ferry available. This is because Pangkor Laut is a private island.

Backpackers in Pangkor
Budget travelers do not have to worry about cheap places to stay in Pangkor. There’s plenty. Apart of the resorts at Pulau Pangkor there are some fine cheap huts near the beach for backpackers available. The cheap places are usually “camps” which here at Pangkor usually means you will get a beach hut. The huts come with mattresses and fan. Bathroom can be attached. We found some nice places around Nipah Bay which are cheap and good values.
*The Nazri Nipah Camp
The Nazri Camp is located at Teluk Nipah. The Camp offers 10 small huts (RM 25) and 7 chalets (RM 40) available.
-All have fans and mattresses available.
-Some of the huts have attached bathrooms.
-Food reasonable prices. barbeque on request available (minimum of 10 people)
-central relaxing area with music and TV (football seems to be very popular).
-laundry service available.

located at lot 4445 at Teluk Nipah. Teluk Nipah has two side roads. Take the one at the corner of the Horizon Inn. It’s at the end of the road. Bookings phone: Adik at 012-5760267

*Pangkor Rimba Kem
is no longer just a camp site.
Economy chalet at Pangkor Rimba Kem
There are standard and economy chalets for Rm 80 and RM 150. There are 4 dormitories for 18 people each.

close to the Coral Bay Beach
restaurant (available for groups).
fantastic view to Coral Bay:

Located at Coral Beach, about 1 km from Nipah Village at the lovely beach the Pangkor Rimba Kem is a reasonable option for the price.

PORT DICKSON
Port Dickson or PD to locals is a beach and holiday destination situated about 32km from Seremban and 60 km from Kuala Lumpur. It is located in the state of Negri Sembilan in Peninsular Malaysia . It takes one hour plus travelling by car from Kuala Lumpur on the North-South Highway to Port Dickson .The 18 km extent of beach from Tanjung Gemuk to Tanjung Tuan is a popular holiday destination for visitors. Many have invested in holiday homes in and around Port Dickson and not to mention those who took PD as a wedding and honeymoon destination.

Getting there

Port Dickson is about an hour away from Kuala Lumpur. Take the North-South highway and exit at Port Dickson. From the exit, take a right turn at traffic lights after the toll. Follow signs to Port Dickson. There’s another highway that leads to Port Dickson from there. On this stretch of highway, you can exit at Lukut or head straight to PD.

The resort, Genting Highlands Resort, also features many hotels owned by Genting subsidiaries including Awana Genting, First World Hotel, Genting Hotel, Highlands Hotel, Resort Hotel and Theme Park Hotel.
malaysia climate and weather

The country is made up of two regions. Peninsular Malaysia which lies between Thailand and Singapore, and East Malaysia across the South China Sea on the island of Borneo. The combined land area of both regions is about 330,400 sq km (127,000 sq miles).

The Peninsular is divided into the ‘east coast’ and the ‘west coast’ by the Main Range, known as Banjaran Titiwangsa, which runs from the Malaysia-Thai border in the north to the southern state of Negeri Sembilan. Geographically, East Malaysia is rugged, with a series of mountain range encompassing the interior regions of both states.

The Crocker Range in Sabah is the site of Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in South East Asia. Low’s Peak, at 4,093 metres above sea level, is the highest point of the mountain.

The country is generally warm throughout the year with humid tropical climate temperatures ranging from 21° to 32° Celsius in the lowlands.Temperatures and humidity are high all year round, Malaysia’s position in the equatorial zone guarantees a classic tropical climate with relative humidity levels usually around 90%.but it is slightly cooler in the mountains. This can however be as low as 16° Celsius in the highlands. Annual rainfall is heavy at 2,500mm (100 inches). Malaysia has a hot with two monsoon seasons, one between October and February and the other from April to October; the latter is characterised by thunderstorms.

On a rainy day, thunder and lightning often accompany the heavy downpour which normally lasts for about an hour or two. The high humidity level at 80% throughout the year favours light and sweat-absorbent material like cotton for daily dressing.

Generally, Malaysia has two distinct seasons. The dry season occurs during the south-west monsoon from May and September. The northeast monsoon brings the rainy season to the country during mid-November till March.

Try to avoid east coast destinations and Island Malaysia between November and January. Otherwise, Malaysia can be enjoyed at any time of year as the weather is generally hot, sunny and fairly uniform; it’s rare to have a day without showers and unusual to have a day without sunshine. Take light summer clothes, carry an umbrella and an extra warm sweater if visiting the hill stations.
Slightly thicker clothing may also be worn in air-conditioned spaces like cinemas and meeting rooms.

If heat is your enemy, the only alternative is to ensure the home you choose for yourself has excellent ventilation with lots of windows for better air circulation, and is fitted with air-conditioning.
Most accommodation will have air conditioning although many houses and apartments will only have it in the bedrooms.

Royal Brunei Airlines Sdn Bhd (Malay: Penerbangan DiRaja Brunei, or RBA, is the flag carrier airline of the Sultanate of Brunei. It is wholly owned by the Government of Brunei. Its home base is the Brunei International Airport in Berakas, just to the north of the capital city of Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan.

ROYAL BRUNEI AIRLINES – ROYAL AIRLINES – CHEAP TICKETS – VISITING BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

Royal Brunei Airlines was established on 18 November 1974 with two Boeing 737s.The airline’s first flight was on 14 April 1975 from the new Brunei International Airport to Singapore. Flights to the then British colony of Hong Kong and the city of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in East Malaysia/Malaysian Borneo started the same day. Early route expansion included services to Manila, Philippines in 1976, and Bangkok, Thailand in 1977.

Royal Brunei acquired a third Boeing 737 in 1980, allowing the airline to reach Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1981 and Darwin, Australia, in 1983.
From National Independence
After the independence of Brunei from the United Kingdom on 1 January 1984, services commenced to Jakarta, Indonesia, on 3 January, thus linking all the other five capital cities of ASEAN to Brunei.

Three Boeing 757 aircraft were purchased in the mid 1980s to enable the airline to expand to Taipei in 1986, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 1988. In 1990, Royal Brunei began their first flight to Europe when they started services to Frankfurt, Germany, via Bangkok and Dubai. Services to London Gatwick Airport commenced in 1990 via Singapore and Dubai, and changed to London Heathrow Airport in 1991. Also in 1991 routes opened to Perth, Western Australia, and to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, via Dubai.
Rapid Expansion
With the airline’s rapid expansion the 737s were sold and Boeing 767 aircraft bought. The delivery of the first Boeing 767 broke a world record when it flew 17 hours and 54 minutes non stop from the Boeing company in Seattle to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, on its way to Brunei. Seven more 767s were delivered, taking the fleet to eight 767s and two Boeing 757s (One of the 757s were sold off to fund the purchase of the new 767s).

In March 1993, Abu Dhabi was added to the route network and flights to Frankfurt and Jeddah were routed through Abu Dhabi instead of Dubai. Bali was the second Indonesian city to be added to the network in May of the same year. Flights to the third destination in Europe, Zürich, commenced in August 1993 via Kuala Lumpur and another new destination Bahrain. Before the end of the year, services to Beijing, China (October), and Cairo, Egypt (November), via Kuala Lumpur and Bahrain, were inaugurated. Royal Brunei sold its last Boeing 737-200s to Aloha Airlines of Hawaii in 1993.

The growth of the network continued in 1994. The delivery of two Fokker 50 aircraft were used to start services to Miri and Labuan in East Malaysia of the same year. Flights to Brisbane, Australia, and Osaka, Japan, commenced the same year in June and December respectively (the Brisbane service was initially routed via Darwin but later upgraded to a nonstop flight). The desire to link all the major Oil and Gas cities on Borneo saw the addition of Balikpapan to the route network in December.

Royal Brunei Airlines Boeing 767-300 landingIn 1995, services began to Kolkata (Calcutta), India, via Singapore and then on towards Dubai. Two Dornier 228s were purchased in the same year and leased to the Malaysian regional carrier, Hornbill Airways, to connect Brunei by air to Mulu. The service to Cairo was suspended in the middle 1995 due to low passenger numbers.

The F-50s were replaced by the larger and more comfortable F-100 jets in 1996 which fueled expansion to Bintulu. The route to Zürich was suspended in September 1996 to enable Royal Brunei to commence daily services to London Heathrow. Some of the flights to London were routed through Yangon, Burma, and Abu Dhabi, instead of via Singapore and Dubai. Yangon proved uneconomic and was dropped from the route the following year.
Consolidation
In August 1997, a Dornier 228 owned by Royal Brunei Airlines but operated and maintained by Malaysian regional carrier Hornbill Airways, carrying 19 passengers to Miri, crashed into high ground near Miri airport. All 19 passengers and two crew died. The Dornier 228s were sold in 1997 and short haul services connecting Brunei to Miri, Labuan, Mulu and Bintulu were terminated. Surabaya was the fourth Indonesian destination to be added to the network later that year.

Unprofitable cheap flights routes to Beijing and Osaka were suspended in 1998 and the F-100s were also sold off to Alpi Eagles Airlines in 1998.

Kuwait was added to the network in 2000 and was served via Singapore, Kolkata and Dubai. It was suspended a year later. Services also began to Shanghai Pudong International Airport in 2001. Royal Brunei started online booking facilities the same year.
Restructuring
After years of unprofitable operation, Royal Brunei began major restructuring in year 2003. The plan was for Royal Brunei’s fleet to grow from 9 aircraft in 2003 to 24 aircraft by the year 2013. The fleet of 6 Boeing 767 will be changed to 15 new narrow-bodied aircraft and 8 wide-bodied aircraft. The plan calls for half of the new aircraft to be leased and the others to be purchased. The plan also included new services to Auckland, Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh City, Sydney and Seoul and to increase its frequencies on other flights.

In 2003, the deliveries of the new Airbus A319 and A320 marked the start of the re-equipping exercise. Two A319s were delivered on August 28 and September 3. A320s were added December 9 and January 3, 2005. All of the Airbus were leased from CIT Aerospace of USA in a seven year contract. The Airbuses fly mainly on regional routes. With the introduction of new aircraft, the Boeing 757 has been phased out and sold to other parties.

In May 2003, Royal Skies, the airlines’ frequent flyer programme, was launched.

On 31 October 2003, a Royal Brunei jet touched down at Auckland International Airport making it the first destination in New Zealand and the first new destination added to the network as part of the restructuring exercise.

By end of the year 2003, Royal Brunei entered a controversial agreement with Royal Tongan Airlines of Tonga. Under the agreement, Royal Tongan Airlines was to wet-lease one of the two remaining B757s of Royal Brunei. In return, Royal Brunei was given the opportunities to open its market to the US. The deal did not happen because Royal Tongan Airlines went into bankruptcy with huge debt in mid 2004, after less than 6 months of operation. As Royal Tongan Airlines was unable to pay the fees, the B757 was repossessed and stored in Auckland International Airport.

In January 2004, the airline launched Blue Sky Fares, a low cost Internet booking facility, offering cheaper economy class fares to selected destinations, to compete with low cost carriers in the region, such as AirAsia.

Starting in March 2004, four of Royal Brunei’s Boeing 767 aircraft were modified by the introduction of SkyDreamer seats in Business Class to replace the old First Class and Business Class Skyluxe seats. Business Class was renamed as Sky Executive Class and in Economy class each seat was installed with an 8.4 inch TV. Sky Executive Class was subsequently renamed Business Class following poor response from the public.

The unprofitable Taipei route was suspended in late 2004. Kuching and Kolkata were dropped on 31 Oct 2004 due to the rising oil prices, but at the same time, Sydney was added to the route network. Commencing 17 December, flights to Jeddah were routed through Sharjah instead of Abu Dhabi.[1]

The last B757 was retired from the Royal Brunei fleet in early 2005.

Royal Brunei has started services to three of the five destinations (Auckland, Sydney and Ho Chi Minh City) stated in the 2003 restructuring plan. Services to Tokyo and Seoul mentioned in the restructuring plan have yet to commence. Sydney was added to the network in 2004, but will be “suspended” (at the same time as Bali) in 2008.[6]
