Pesta Sungai Melaka 2009
30 May 2009 Until 7 June 2009
Pesta Sungai Melaka 2009 is back! An eight days festival with over 72 activities will be held along the Melaka River. The event will be launch on 30th May 2009 at Dataran Sungai Melaka. Don’t miss this exciting event!

The Melaka government plans to introduce a ‘water taxi’ service along Sungai Melaka and the coastal areas in the state before the end of the year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the water taxis would provide service from Melaka Sentral to the Dataran Sungai Melaka and from the Sungai Melaka estuary to the Sungai Linggi Jetty and Sungai Rambai Jetty.

He said this in his speech at the MELAKA RIVER FESTIVAL when launched the ceremony,

Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob, launched the festival which included programmes such as cultural and arts performances by the various communities in the state, and a fireworks display.

Mohd Ali said the proposal to introduce the water taxis like the ones used in Britain and New Zealand was to diversify activities along Sungai Melaka, which was once severely polluted but had now become the pride of the state.

He said so far, the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation provided 25 passenger boats for the ‘Melaka River Cruise’ for people to enjoy the beauty along the 4.5 kilometre stretch between Tanah Rempah Ratus and the river mouth.

Forty events have been drawn up throughout the nine-day ‘Pesta Sungai Melaka 2009′ beginning tonight at four major locations namely Taman Rempah Ratus, Padang Nyiru, Dataran Sungai Melaka and Sungai Melaka Estuary.

-benama-

Kerajaan negeri akan mengembalikan semula kegemilangan Sungai Melaka dari gelaran sleepy hollow kepada ‘Venice Of The East’ sebagaimana yang pernah dilalui pada abad ke-15.

Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd.

NY Times readers choose Penang as No.2 must-visit destination for 2009

A fascinating world of gourmet cuisine, exciting shopping venues and unique places of attraction are all within easy access for patients seeking pleasant diversions while recuperating. There are more than 10 private general hospitals and medical centres, an oncology hospital with facilities for radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and at least three nursing schools in Penang.

Sunday January 18, 2009
“As reported in The Star, January 18, 2009 by Christina Chin”

GEORGE TOWN: Readers of The New York Times have chosen Penang as the second best destination among “44 Places To Go in 2009”.

In top spot in the recommendations found on the paper’s website (http://www.nytimes.com) was Beirut.

The only other South-East Asian destination in the ranking is Phuket, which is in 15th place.

Other places include Washington (fourth), Rome (fifth) and Metz in France (sixth). The newspaper ranked Penang in the 22nd spot while Phuket was placed 12th.

Besides the second spot in the overall readers’ ranking, Penang is also in the top 12 places in the frugal and food categories (both readers’ and the paper’s recommendations).

The New York Times said adventurous foodies are now turning to Penang, the culinary capital of Malaysia, where they are eating their way through one of South-East Asia’s liveliest street-food scenes.

It said there are city-run hawker stands everywhere and even refined dishes like char koay teow rarely cost more than US$2 (about RM7.20)

State Tourism Development, Culture, Arts and Heritage committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said Penang was chosen by the readers because of its good food.

“The ranking is a boost for the state as a tourist destination.

“Penang food is so famous that I know of Singaporeans who fly here just to eat,” he said.

Medical Tourism – Heal & Holiday in Penang
A regional medical tourism hub in South East Asia, Penang offers great choices in contemporary medicine as well as traditional therapies and spa treatments.

It is also the preferred destination for those seeking affordable cosmetic and elective surgery. As a ‘heal and holiday’ destination, medical tourists in Penang could undergo surgical treatment in state-of-the-art facilities, and enjoy peaceful recuperation in complete anonymity in world-class resorts and health spas.

Most hospitals here are fully equipped to deal with the full range of medical conditions ranging from life-threatening illness and injury to chronic medical disorders and maintaining personal fitness.

For enquiries regarding hospital procedures and medical expenses, please contact the respective hospital’s public relations department.
Big Blue

Supported by the National Geographic Society, the world’s eminent blue whale scientists embark on a revolutionary mission: they’ll find, identify and tag California blue whales, use the DNA samples to confirm the sex of individual whales, then rejoin the massive creatures’ stunning migration when they collect at a chimera known as the Costa Rica Dome. These experts have observed, firsthand, courtship behavior among the whales at the moving mass of krill and currents 500 miles off the coast of Costa Rica. Now they hope to find and record the Holy Grail of blue whale science… the breeding and calving grounds of the biggest mammals in the sea.

National Geographic Channel brings the world’s biggest baby to unveil Asia’s first blue whale exhibition across Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong from April 2009. The Big Blue Multimedia Exhibition takes visitors into the world of the magnificent blue whale through National Geographic’s groundbreaking new HD documentary – Big Blue and a range of interactive exhibits to promote the conservation of marine life and ecosystems.
3 Food-lovers

Indigenous Malaysian cuisine has been influenced by Chinese, Indian, Thai and many other cultures to produce an entirely new and rich cuisine of their own. Many Malay dishes revolve around a Rempah, which is a spice paste or mix similar to an Indian Masala. Rempahs are made by grinding up fresh and/or dried spices and herbs to create a spice paste which is then sauteed in oil to bring out the aromas. Being a multicultural country, Malaysians have over the years adapted each other’s dishes to suit the taste buds of their own culture. For instance, Malaysians of Chinese descent have adapted the Indian curry, and made it more dilute and less spicy to suit their taste.

Chinese noodles have been crossed with Indian and Malay tastes and thus Malay fried noodles and Indian fried noodles were born. Thai food also features strongly in Malaysian cuisine and localised versions of Thai favourites like tom yam are widely available. Smaller pockets of migrants such as Filipinos and Indonesians also have set up shop locally, catering mostly to their exclusive clientèle. Being culturally close to Malaysia, a lot of Indonesian food have been accepted by Malaysians as a part of their own, like sate, Soto (food), Rendang, Cendol and others. In Kuala Lumpur and other major towns, one can find more restaurants serving Japanese, Korean, Italian, American and other international cuisines.

Malaysia’s climate allows for fruits to be grown all year round. The durian, a fruit with a spiky outer shell and a characteristic odour is a local tropical fruit that is notable because it provokes strong emotions either of loving it or hating it. It is also known as the “King of Fruits”. The rambutan also has a distinctive appearance, being red or yellow in colour (when ripe) and having fleshy pliable spines or ‘hairs’ on its outer skin.
The mangosteen, often called the “Queen of Fruits”.

Hari Merdeka, as well as Labour Day (1 May), the King’s birthday (first Saturday of June) and some other festivals are federal gazetted public holidays.

Muslims in Malaysia celebrate Muslim holidays. The most celebrated festival, Hari Raya Puasa (also called Hari Raya Aidilfitri) is the Malay translation of Eid al-Fitr. It is generally a festival honoured by the Muslims worldwide marking the end of Ramadan, the fasting month. In addition to Hari Raya Puasa, they also celebrate Hari Raya Haji (also called Hari Raya Aidiladha, the translation of Eid ul-Adha), Awal Muharram (Islamic New Year) and Maulidur Rasul (Birthday of the Prophet).

Chinese in Malaysia typically celebrate festivals that are observed by Chinese around the world. Chinese New Year is the most celebrated among the festivals which lasts for fifteen days and ends with Chap Goh Mei. Other festivals celebrated by Chinese are the Qingming Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. In addition to traditional Chinese festivals, Buddhists Chinese also celebrate Vesak.

Despite most of the festivals being identified with a particular ethnic or religious group, all Malaysians celebrate the festivities together, regardless of their background. For years when the Hari Raya Puasa and Chinese New Year coincided, a portmanteau Kongsi Raya was coined, which is a combination of Gong Xi Fa Cai (a greeting used on the Chinese New Year) and Hari Raya (which could also mean “celebrating together” in Malay. Similarly, the portmanteau Deepa Raya was coined when Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali coincided.

Teluk Intan Leaning Tower

Malaysia boasts its own equivalent to the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, right here at the heart of the Teluk Intan town centre. Like its Italian counterpart, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan has a leftward slant, and all the ingredients to make it an architectural sight to behold. It is the pride of Teluk Intan or formerly known as Teluk Anson.

Standing at 25.5m tall, its construction appears to comprise of eight different levels but is actually divided into only three storeys. When it was first built, its structure was straight but it began to tilt about 1.8 metre towards Jalan Bandar between 1889 and 1895.

Teluk Intan Leaning Tower ( Menara Condong Teluk Intan )

This pagoda-like structure was built by a Chinese contractor, Leong Choon Choong, in 1885. Initially, it was used as a covered water tank to store water sufficient for 800 Teluk Intan residents at that time. During the Japanese Occupation, it was used as an observation post for the Japanese Army. Later, it became headquarters for the Boys Scouts.

These days, it just tells the time. Come Wednesdays, the clock tower’s caretaker will wind up the clock’s mechanism using a crank. Commissioned in London, the clock chimes twice every 15 minutes. The chimes can be heard as far as eight kilometres in radius especially at night.

To get to Teluk Intan from the North-South Expressway, exit at Bidor Interchange and proceed to the road leading to Teluk Intan. The Tower is easily accessible through Jalan Selat.
