The Sibu archipelago has almost the same magical charm and brilliance as celebrated by Pulau Rawa and Pulau Tioman. The island consists of Pulau Sibu Besar, Pulau Sibu Tengah, Pulau Sibu Hujung, Pulau Kukus, and Pulau Tinggi. Pulau Sibu forms part of the Seribuat chain of islands and lies 12 kilometres off the east coast of the West Peninsular of Malaysia. The island is shaped like a triangular hour glass, about 6 kilometres long and never more than one kilometre wide it’s whole length. You can walk from one resort to the other by jungle trekking. The abundance of marine life makes it a terrific spot for recreational diving and snorkeling, angling and watersports like canoeing, windsurfing, sailing, yachting, cruising and island hoping.

The popularity of the island has been a blessing to the island resort, which has seen an increasing number of tourists from Scandinavian countries. Although filming took place in Pulau Sibu Kukus and Pulau Sibu Besar, majority of the crew, participants, as well as the media covering the series, stayed at the Sibu Island Resort in Pulau Sibu Tengah.

Angling is probably the most popular activity around the archipelago, offering highly regarded sportfish like tenggiri(narrow barred mackerel), black marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi or dolphin and good quality food fish like garoupers and snappers.
The resort can arrange fishing trips around the islands or at the surrounding kelongs or one can just try one’s luck at the breakwater bunds at the island’s jetty.

Those who prefer to take a “deep” dip into the sea can go for diving or snorkeling trips to the nearby Pulau Kukus or Pulau Lima. Uninhabited Kukus is the perfect hideout for those who treasure privacy.
On the way back, make a stop at Sibu Besar to absorb the picturesque view of the serene Kampung Duku, home to about 200 villagers. Witness the time-tested method on making copra or the handicraft-making from coconut wastes.
Back on land, take a short moderate jungle walk into the vegetation to reach a beautiful stretch of beach, nicknamed by staff as the Private Beach. The 30-minute trip is suitable for both children and healthy senior citizens.

The best months to visit the Sibu archipelago are from March to August. Though it isn’t closed to visitors during the monsoon season, the choppy sea will deter “enjoyable and comfortable sea activities”.
With its natural beauty and charm and offering adventurous and “soft” activities, Sibu Tengah is great destination for the whole family or those planning to treat themselves to a perfect holiday.

Kelong Wing Sing
Kelong, lift nets are use to catch fishes that are attracted by the lights placed above the nets at night.
The kelong on the left is located at Sibu Island. It is one of the best in the east cost of Johor. Don’t be surprise because the kelong is equipped with TV, kitchen, bathroom and living room !

This is for the lucky ones. The catch is depending on the right season and the tide. btw, it is really hard to guarantee you any catch. Even if you go fishing at some commercial fishing center, you might come back empty handed. Well, the fishes are there but whether you can get it is a different story.
Rates is at RM250 for 3 days and 2 night inclusive return boat transfer, food, supper and lodging and fishing trip.

The surrounding waters contain fascinating coral reefs teeming with colourful marine life. Shipwrecks off its coast can also be found. In the olden days, Chinese junks and pirate vessels often exchanged cannon fire around this island, and the remains of these battles lie scattered around the seabed.

There are facilities for scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing and angling. Visitors can go for a hike through the jungle leading to unspoilt mangrove swamps or visit the kelong, or jetty, where anchovies are caught. Alternatively, head for the kampong, or village, to get a first-hand look at how coconuts are smoked to make copra.

Key Tips :
If you are travelling with children or you are not a strong swimmer, choose to stay on a beach on the western side of the island where the sea is calmer, as you can avoid exposure to the South China Sea here

How to get there
By Road and Sea:
You can catch a boat ride to Sibu Island from Tanjung Leman jetty, south of Mersing. From Mersing town, travel south along the Mersing – Kota Tinggi (Highway 3) trunk road for about 44km and turn left. The road passes through an oil palm plantation, and is narrow and winding in certain parts. From Johor Bahru, head for Kota Tinggi town. From Kota Tinggi town, travel north on the Kota Tinggi – Mersing trunk road (Highway 3) for 48km and turn right to the same junction mentioned above.

Pulau Tiga (the name means “Island of Three”) was formed on September 21, 1897 when a large earthquake on the Philippine island of Mindanao triggered a volcanic eruption just north of Borneo. The eruption of mud and rock formed a new island 66 feet (20 meters) wide. Over the next four decades, subsequent eruptions of the volcano and the development and eruptions of two additional adjacent mud volcanoes expanded, coalesced, and formed the island in its current state. The last eruption of the mud volcanoes on the island was in 1941 but warm mud continues to ooze from these geothermal vents on the island. Though it’s mostly a low-lying island, Pulau Tiga’s highest peak is approximately 330 feet (100 meters) tall. The island is now about 2.8 miles (4.5 km) long and 1 mile (1.5 km) wide, for a total of eight square miles (20.7 km2).

Situated 48 km southwest of Kota Kinabalu, the Pulau Tiga Park comprises of the three islands; Tiga, Kalampunan Besar & Kalampunan Damit.

Pulau Tiga is the largest of the three islands and has three mud volcanoes. The 30 minutes trail starts at the base camp near to the National University of Malaysia marine research site. The volcanoes are now largely dormant. Every few hours, bubbles of gas rise to the surface and with a loud sighing ‘gloop’ spatter cold mud over the surrounding vegetation. Many visitors are fascinated by this and some even spread the cold mud over their face and body – nature’s beauty treatment! One of the sapling of special interest encountered along this trail is the Tongkat Ali which is well-known for its medicinal properties.Sea erosion has reduced Pulau Kalampunian Besar to a small sand cay built up from unconsolidated coral fragments.

Whilst Pulau Kalampunian Damit is composed of sandstone, limestone and shale with thick vegetation where hundreds of poisonous sea snakes can be found resting under rocks, in crevices or on tree stumps. All three islands have brackish inland lagoons.

Unlike many other offshore islands of Borneo, the vegetation on these islands are practically untouched. White sand beaches and coral reefs, ideal for swimming & snorkeling, surround all three islands. The coral reefs which fringe part of Pulau Tiga Park are easily accessible and contains some species not found in the reefs on the west coast. Within the emerald depths are found delicate sea fans, staghorn corals and schools of brightly coloured coral fish.
The pristine natural environment of Pulau Tiga Park is protected by the Malaysian governmen. Pulau Tiga and its surrounding sea is home to a diverse number of interesting animal species. Poisonous sea snakes, proboscis and macaque monkeys, flying foxes, bats, sharks, monitor lizards, barracuda (a total of 132 species of fish exist in the park), sea turtles, and a plethora of birds – including megapodes, hornbills and sea eagles all call Pulau Tiga home. The sea snakes, twice as poisonous as the King Cobra, are capable of killing a human with its venom in approximately five minutes. The megapode birds build their nests on the ground and lay their eggs a few feet deep in piles of sand and debris; when the chicks hatch they dig their way out of their nest, unguarded by their parents.

Snorkeling is the number one activity on Redang. Many resort packages include snorkeling tours by boat to nearby islands, but there are some decent reefs right off Pasir Panjang. The best of the lot is at the southern end next to the aptly named Redang Reef Resorts, and the small hill/island in the middle of Pasir Panjang is a nesting ground for baby sharks. It is very important to be concious while snorkeling if you are using fins as it can take many years for the coral to re-grow.

The snorkeling is quite protected making the water quite calm and fins are not necessary. Redang offers a safe and family-friendly snorkelling experience with its clear, calm waters. Even young children, the elderly and ‘newbies’ can enjoy snorkelling. Just put on a lifejacket, mask & snorkel and jump in

According to a year 2000 study Pulau Redang Marine Park has a very high coral & fish species richness and is considered to be a globally important area of coral biodiversity. Specifically, the study at Pulau Redang Marine Park was carried out at Teluk Mat Dollah, Chagar Hutang, Terumbu Kili, Pulau Ling, Pulau Lima and Pulau Lang Tengah. Coral reefs at Redang were among the less severely affected during the outbreak of El Nino in 1998, which wiped out coral reefs in some other parts of the world.

where to snorkling?

1.Tanjung Tengah
Tanjung Tengah and Shark Bay as seen from the southern side of Pasir Panjang beach.
Probably the best house reef (and the busiest) is Tanjung Tengah in Pasir Panjang. The southern side of Tanjung Tengah is commonly known as ‘Shark Bay’ as the reefs there are a nursery for baby black-tip sharks. April to August seems to be the best time to spot these shark pups, up to a dozen of them. Also resident to this reef are schooling needlefish, a few turtles, squid, an orange-striped triggerfish, a resident barracuda and the other coomon reef fishes.

Due to the popularity and easy accessibility of this house reef, over the years it has suffered quite a lot of damage particularly the corals nearer shore. During low tide, the corals are in very shallow water and are easily damaged through physical contact with snorkellers when they stand on them or kick them accidentally, especially when wearing booties or fins. As a precaution, some environmentally-conscious resorts at Pasir Panjang have stopped rental of fins to guests who snorkel. Please do not use fins unless you are able to control your buoyancy and use them well. Snorkel carefully, don’t go too near the corals and for your own safety, do not snorkel beyond the floating white markers where you may put yourself in the path of boats.

2.Tanjung Mak Cantik

The house reef at Tanjung Mak Cantik begins in front of Redang Reef resort and goes around the rocky outcrop to the back of the resort.

This house reef is easily accessible from the front and rear beach of Redang Reef Resort at southern Pasir Panjang. From the front beach, get in the water and snorkel right along the rocky outcrop. It is not as ‘busy’ as Shark Bay, but you’ll get to see just as much variety of reef life, including a resident stingray, titan triggerfish, school of squid, porcupine fish, giant grouper, clams, christmas tree coral and perhaps even a banded krait sea snake and octopus.

Alternatively, you can also start from the rear beach and head out with the outcrop to your left. Going around the outcrop should be left to experienced snorkellers as the water can get a little choppy once you reach the side facing the open sea.

3.Marine Park Centre

The Marine Park Centre is the most popular snorkelling destination and can be crowded during peak visiting season. At 3-6m deep, the area around the jetty at the Marine Park Centre in Pulau Pinang is covered mainly with hard corals and offers easy access to a large variety of marine life that are resident among the PVC pipes of the artificial reef directly under the jetty, the most popular being the resident moray eel.

This place has the largest concentration of fishes in any single location probably due to the fact that many visitors feed the fish. Expect plenty of hungry damselfish, sergeant majors, wrasses, parrotfish and the resident triggerfish seeking food handouts from visitors. Just be careful not to get your fingers mistaken for food! Napolean wrasses are occasionally spotted to the west of the jetty, as are adult blacktip sharks.

To the east of the jetty is a shipwreck lying in about 8-10 metres of water with part of it visible above the water surface. The coral encrusted structures make it an interesting place to explore. Just be careful not to scratch yourself on the metal structures and avoid touching the stinging hydroids that grow on the wreck. It’s many crevices and hiding places are home to moray eels, giant groupers, batfish and angelfish. Be careful of currents when swimming out to the wreck – it is best to avoid visiting it when there are currents. Also keep within the white marker buoys as there are strong currents sweeping through the channel between Pulau Pinang and Pulau Redang.

Tioman is the biggest and most impressive island at the east coast. There is a brisk jungle covers a ridge on the west section of the island, which ends at the idyllic location of a beautiful palm fringed beach. Tioman offers a wide range of activities for visitors: snorkeling in crystal clear water, discover the beautiful underwater world when you go diving, or just laze on the beach while you work on that tan. Also, there is a jungle on the island that is just begging to be explored. The dense forest is a habitat for many kinds of flora and fauna.

For centuries,Tioman Island has been regarded as a jewel in the sea. One early Malaysian legend claims Tioman to be a transformed dragon princess. Apparently the beautiful princess stopped enroute to Singapore from China to admire the charms of this spot. So enraptured was she that she decided to discontinue her journey, take the form of an island, and remain there as a place of shelter and comfort to passing travellers. Tioman’s beauty, from its towering dual volcanic peak to its soft sands, swaying palms, and vibrant profusion of tropical wildflowers, is such that it lends credence to the tale. One indication of Tioman’s enduring ability to inspire fables is that it was chosen as the location for the film version of the musical “South Pacific.” It is Bali Hai.

Diving at Tioman Island.

Perfect escape for snorkeling and diving at all levels of mastery. Come and experience the rare species of multi-colored fishes and coral reefs. Explore the treasure of the sea and you will get a splendid view of exotic marine life. Manta Rays and Whale shark can be seen in March, April and May. The main diving season is April to October. The best diving spot is around the smaller islands like Tulai, Chebeh, Bahara and Jahat. Most of the dive operators have their own house reefs.
Technical divers can explore the famous South China Sea wrecks. Name includes the Prince of Wales, the Repulse, Varella and many other exciting sub marines and battle ships. These famous wrecks found their final destination around Tioman during the second world war. Most of them are in water deeper than 40 meters.

Getting There

The boat ride from Mersing takes about 1 1/2 hours, while from Singapore will be about 4 1/2 hours.Tioman Island is also served by Berjaya Air.
