The Pemanggil island is a fisherman‘s best-kept secret. Its other magnetic charms include endless stretches of white sandy beaches and awesome snorkeling spots. This remote island is famous for its beauty and abundance of marine life within its clear emerald waters. Pemanggil island, situated south of Tioman, requires a 4 to 5 hours ride by boat from Mersing, the mainland Johor. In Malaysia’s recent fishing competition organised by a leading newspaper company, Pemanggil Island was nominated as one of the best fishing spots in the country. Day 01
 ( Pulau Pemanggil / Mersing)

Depart Mersing jetty for Pulau Pemanggil, Johor. (5.00 am, depending on the tide). The tropical island of Pemanggil Island captures the imagination of those who love sea and it’s tranquility. Upon arrival, check-in to rooms. The rest of the day free for you to explore the island . You may option to go fishing, snorkeling, swimming, canoeing and jet skiing. Lunch time, 1.00pm buffet. After lunch, free activities. Dinner will be served at 8.00pm. After dinner, in-house movie and karaoke all night long.

 (Pulau Aur, Pulau Dayang, Pulau Lang Excursion)

After breakfast, which will be at 8.00 am, you will be taken on an island-hopping trip (add RM 30.00 per person) . Uninhibited islands, which is surrounded by white coral sands and undisturbed corals, you can indulge in snorkeling or just sun bathing on the sand beach. The boat will anchor at a favourite spot for you to try your luck at fishing. Packed lunch will be provided (picnic). After lunch you will be taken back to Lanting Beach Resort for more free activities, such as water sports and so on. Get ready for dinner and BBQ. Pemanggil means “Calling” in the Malay Language. Situated south of Tioman Island, famous for fishing expeditions especially for marlins, giant travallys and Tenggiri (Spanish Mackerel). One of the lesser known islands, and still untouched by modern developments. It is not only known for fishing but also for jungle/hill climbing and also for diving/snorkeling. For snorkellers the most thrilling experience will be to see a sunken wreck close to shore not more than 5 meters deep.

Kampong Buau

This is the main kampung (village) where the first settlers made home. A clinic ,a mosque,a police outpost and a school form the backbone of the community. The school is made up of only 15 students with ages ranging from 5 to 12years. One of the reasons many families have moved away from the island is the need to pursue further education for their children. The population of the island has now dwindled to a mere 40 villagers and continues to drop as younger folk leave in search of their destinies. Towering majestically in the heart of Pemanggil Island, is a huge boulder known locally as Batu Buau, regarded as the sacred guardian of the island. On a clear day, this landmark is clearly visible from the south of Tioman Island which is 50 km away.

Kampung Pontianak
 

The village has retained the name ‘pontianak’from a banshee that once had disturbed the village but is now a quiet, serene beach. The villagers there go about their daily chores of salting fish, repairing nets and taking coffee breaks. And there’s a great snorkelling patch just in front of the jetty.

In the old days, the village was situated up on the hill. As villagers started moving out, the remaining ones moved down to the beachfront.  However, only foundations of the settlement and graves of their loved ones remain as milestones of the living history on the island.

Teluk Lancang is an isolated bay on the northeastern coast of Pemanggil Island. Coconut trees grow with abundance amidst the tropical vegetation along the coast. It is an angler’s paradise. Accommodation is very simple and basic, but there’s nothing better than savoring the rustic life of a fishing village. For the adventurous, the hill outcrop of the island makes a challenging climb with the reward being a breathtaking view of the ocean.

Getting there
 
From Johor Bahru city centre, take the Johor Bahru-Kota Tinggi trunk road and on through the Kota Tinggi-Mersing trunk road (Highway 3). From North-South Expressway take the Ayer Hitam exit (Interchange 244) and drive towards toward Kluang and onwards using the Kluang-Jemaluang trunk road (Highway 50). After Jemaluang town, get onto the Kota Tinggi-Mersing trunk road, heading towards Mersing. Look out for signboards that will lead you to Mersing Jetty. 

Pulau Pemanggil is 1,036 ha ( 6.4 km square ). It has population of 109 people. The locals involve in tourism, fisheing and agriculture activities. The island has a small dam for their water supply. Located 85.5km from Mersing jetty and 59.5km from Tanjung Leman jetty. It uses solar energy system and genset for electric supply. Installation managed by TNB.

Pulau Tioman or Tioman Islands is a sparsely populated island located on the eastern coast of Malaysia. Time magazine had selected Tioman as one of the world’s most beautiful islands. The densely forested island is still sparsely inhabited, but is surrounded by numerous white coral reefs, making it a haven for scuba divers from around the region. The beaches of the Tioman islands are clean and covered with white sands. They are lined with numerous palm trees and are the best place to go for sunbathing. The water over here is warm and clear and filled with abundant marine life. The popular beaches that one can visit include those of Tekek, Genting and Salang. GETTING THERE

Tioman is off the south-east coast of peninsular Malaysia, just north of the Johor-Pahang state borders. It is reachable by speedboat or ferry from the coastal town of Mersing or from Tanjung Gemuk.

Alternatively, the closest airports to Mersing are the Senai airport in Johor Bahru and Changi airport in Singapore.
Senai airport is serviced by Air Asia and Malaysia Airlines with flights from various national and regional destinations.

Long-haul international flights to Johor Bahru connect through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

*Speedboats and ferries to Tioman

Speedboats and ferries depart from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok (north of Mersing).
From Mersing, speedboats (20 passengers) reach the island within 2 hours
while the ferries (150 passengers) can take up to 3 hours.
Tickets cost RM 35 each way (RM 45 for speedboats)
ferries leave every one to two hours between 09:30 and 17:30.
Ferry and boat services are less frequent from Tanjung Gemuk, but prices and journey times are roughly the same.

From the Johor Bahru Larkin bus station, charter a taxi to Mersing RM 100 , 2 hours.

Drive
From Kota Tinggi, the way north to Mersing , 3 hours.

From Kuala Lumpur the most common option is via the PLUS highway (E2) to the south, exiting at Segamat and continuing east on Route 50 through Kluang to Mersing.

Alternatively, take the East Coast Highway (E8) from KL to Kuantan and Route No 3 southwards through Pekan and Rompin to Mersing.

At the ferry terminal itself, there are restaurants and convenience stores for any last minute needs and pangs of hunger. In town, about 15-20 minutes’ walk from the jetty, there are banks, ATMs, internet cafes, supermarkets, shops and hotels (in case you need to spend the night in Mersing).
Many of Mersing’s resorts have offices in Mersing, close to the ferry terminal.
There is a secure car park that charges around RM8 per day.

 most popular of Tioman’s villages, Salang located in a small bay at the north of the island. This private, boulder strewn bay is a peaceful retreat and the nearby villages are easily accessible through short jungle trails or a sea taxi service. A five minute walk to the north brings you to a deserted beach, and the trail continues to Monkey Bay and Salang Village. Ayer Batang Village is 15 minutes south from here on the jungle footpath. Although the beach right in front of the Panuba Inn Resort is small, the soft sand, tall trees and relative privacy make it an ideal place to relax and unwind.

The main village and most developed area on the island, complete with an airport and a smattering of duty-free shops. The police station and clinic are also located here.  A curve of sand, lined with Causarina trees stretches from the jetty to the south. A handful of resorts, mostly frequented by divers, are clustered around this beach while a few restaurants and shops lie a bit further from the shore. The dusty road that cuts through Tekek is mostly used by locals on motorcycles and visitors on rented bicycles. Renting a bicycle is a great way to explore the area, although you may need to carry it over the headland as you head towards Air Batang Village in the north. Vans and cars ferry tourists from the airport to the massive Berjaya resort south of town and four-wheel drive vehicles stand ready to head through the jungle to Juara on the other side of the island or head an adventurous two-hour trek through hilly rainforest on foot.

5)Lalang…………………..
Lalang Village is nothing more than a cluster of houses and shops at the edge of the expansive Berjaya resort. The Berjaya occupies a prime piece of land on a beautiful stretch of beach and, including an 18-hole golf course, is larger than any of the villages on the island. The beach is around 1 km long, lined with palm trees and lots of soft sand. Deck chairs and parasols, for the use of Berjaya guests, complete the picture of an idyllic tropical island holiday.

6)Juara……………………….
The only village on the eastern side of the island has the best beach on Tioman with sunrise over the open water of the South China Sea. Tranquil and beautiful, this village is the perfect place to get away from it all.  A few chalets and restaurants are lined up on the golden sands of the beach, which is up to 20 metres wide in places. The curve of the beach stretches over two kilometres, ending in a rocky headland in the north you may find some small reef sharks while the small bay to the south of the lagoon is a popular nesting place for turtles. Behind the village, a waterfall crashes down from the hillside and the untouched jungle is home to monkeys, birds and monitor lizards. The regular Tioman Ferry does not stop at the Juara jetty. The cheapest, but hardest way to reach this village is by braving the two-hour, seven kilometre trek through the jungle from Tekek Village. From Tekek you can also take one of the four-wheel drive vehicles or even a motorcycle, or by sea with chartered boat from any of the other villages.

7)Paya……………………………
This tiny village is sandwiched between the sea and a lagoon and is fronted by a narrow strip of beach. Only a handful of resorts, restaurants, shops and homes make up the village. In the hillside behind, a clear mountain stream – Paya’s main water source – rushes over granite boulders towards the lagoon. The coral living in the blue water right off the shore is home to many colourful species of marine life and there are excellent snorkelling spots. The best location is at the northern end of the village, where there is less human disturbance and a small rocky island lays a few metres from the shore.

The best time to visit
The monsoon season peaks between November and March every year. You can expect more rain and rough seas and consequently frequency of ferry services are reduced during this time. Some resorts are closed for the months of December and January, typically re-opening from Chinese New Year (late January or early February) onwards. Those that remain open often offer reduced rates during this time.

Tioman is very popular with Malaysian and Singaporean holidaymakers and it is highly recommended to book well in advance for weekends and the public and school holidays of Malaysia and Singapore.
 

Tioman is the biggest and most impressive island at the east coast. There is a brisk jungle covers a ridge on the west section of the island, which ends at the idyllic location of a beautiful palm fringed beach. Tioman offers a wide range of activities for visitors: snorkeling in crystal clear water, discover the beautiful underwater world when you go diving, or just laze on the beach while you work on that tan. Also, there is a jungle on the island that is just begging to be explored. The dense forest is a habitat for many kinds of flora and fauna.

For centuries,Tioman Island has been regarded as a jewel in the sea. One early Malaysian legend claims Tioman to be a transformed dragon princess. Apparently the beautiful princess stopped enroute to Singapore from China to admire the charms of this spot. So enraptured was she that she decided to discontinue her journey, take the form of an island, and remain there as a place of shelter and comfort to passing travellers. Tioman’s beauty, from its towering dual volcanic peak to its soft sands, swaying palms, and vibrant profusion of tropical wildflowers, is such that it lends credence to the tale. One indication of Tioman’s enduring ability to inspire fables is that it was chosen as the location for the film version of the musical “South Pacific.” It is Bali Hai.

Diving at Tioman Island.

Perfect escape for snorkeling and diving at all levels of mastery. Come and experience the rare species of multi-colored fishes and coral reefs. Explore the treasure of the sea and you will get a splendid view of exotic marine life. Manta Rays and Whale shark can be seen in March, April and May. The main diving season is April to October. The best diving spot is around the smaller islands like Tulai, Chebeh, Bahara and Jahat. Most of the dive operators have their own house reefs.
Technical divers can explore the famous South China Sea wrecks. Name includes the Prince of Wales, the Repulse, Varella and many other exciting sub marines and battle ships. These famous wrecks found their final destination around Tioman during the second world war. Most of them are in water deeper than 40 meters.

Getting There

The boat ride from Mersing takes about 1 1/2 hours, while from Singapore will be about 4 1/2 hours.Tioman Island is also served by Berjaya Air.
