The Pemanggil island is a fisherman‘s best-kept secret. Its other magnetic charms include endless stretches of white sandy beaches and awesome snorkeling spots. As the island is still not known, the corals are almost untouched and the waters are free of pollution. This remote island is famous for its beauty and abundance of marine life within its clear emerald waters. Pemanggil island, situated south of Tioman, requires a 4 to 5 hours ride by boat from Mersing, the mainland Johor. In Malaysia’s recent fishing competition organised by a leading newspaper company, Pemanggil Island was nominated as one of the best fishing spots in the country. Among the favorite game fish is the Black Marlin, however it is quite rare to catch it. The island is well known for deep sea fishing and good hunting grounds for marlins and tenggiri (spanish mackerel). Along the journey if you’re an avid angler, drop a line and start fishing right away! One will never be disappointed with the catch. Pemanggil Island is one of the ‘must visit‘ fishing paradise.
A kampung concept with chalets built on a rocky plateau just off Kampung Pak Kaleh. The resort arranges group trips for minimum of 20pax and there are usually groups going to the island on weekends. If there are only a few of you travelling, you could join these groups for a 3days 2nights trip. All chalet rooms have attached bathroom and fan and package includes boat transfer from Mersing-Island-Mersing and is full -board.

Pemanggil means “Calling” in the Malay Language. Situated south of Tioman Island, famous for fishing expeditions especially for marlins, giant travallys and Tenggiri (Spanish Mackerel). One of the lesser known islands, and still untouched by modern developments. It is not only known for fishing but also for jungle/hill climbing and also for diving/snorkeling. For snorkellers the most thrilling experience will be to see a sunken wreck close to shore not more than 5 meters deep.

-
Kampong Buau

This is the main kampung (village) where the first settlers made home. A clinic ,a mosque,a police outpost and a school form the backbone of the community. The school is made up of only 15 students with ages ranging from 5 to 12years. One of the reasons many families have moved away from the island is the need to pursue further education for their children. The population of the island has now dwindled to a mere 40 villagers and continues to drop as younger folk leave in search of their destinies. Towering majestically in the heart of Pemanggil Island, is a huge boulder known locally as Batu Buau, regarded as the sacred guardian of the island. On a clear day, this landmark is clearly visible from the south of Tioman Island which is 50 km away.

-
Kampung Pontianak

The village has retained the name ‘pontianak’from a banshee that once had disturbed the village but is now a quiet, serene beach. The villagers there go about their daily chores of salting fish, repairing nets and taking coffee breaks. And there’s a great snorkelling patch just in front of the jetty.

-
Kampung Pak Kaleh

In the old days, the village was situated up on the hill. As villagers started moving out, the remaining ones moved down to the beachfront. However, only foundations of the settlement and graves of their loved ones remain as milestones of the living history on the island.
-
Teluk Lancang is an isolated bay on the northeastern coast of Pemanggil Island. Coconut trees grow with abundance amidst the tropical vegetation along the coast. It is an angler’s paradise. Accommodation is very simple and basic, but there’s nothing better than savoring the rustic life of a fishing village. For the adventurous, the hill outcrop of the island makes a challenging climb with the reward being a breathtaking view of the ocean.

Located in a Marine Conservation Park, Gem Island or Pulau Gemia in Malay, truly befits its name. Urbanites who have to endure numerous pressures daily would long for such a perfect getaway. Just think; an escape from hours of traffic jams, environmental pollution, bosses and colleagues from hell, insane drivers, grumpy frontliners.

Pamper yourself at the Gem Island Resort & Spa. A rare jewel awaiting your discovery.

Gem Island (Pulau Gemia) is a privately owned island, situated about 800 metres off Kapas Island. Gem Island had white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, beautiful corals and fascinating marine life. In another effort to preserve wildlife, one of the beaches on Gem Island is used as a turtle hatchery. Terengganu is renowned as one of the few places where turtles (including the giant Leatherback) come ashore to lay their eggs. On the island the green turtle is the most common. But the Hawksbill and Olive Ridley turtle are regular visitors. After laying, the eggs are collected and transferred by Gem Island staff to an enclosure on the beach. This protects them from marauding predators such as monitor lizards, crabs and seabirds.
No one would share a treasure island. This rare jewel shouldn’t be exposed. It shouldn’t be shared. Definitely not with a group schoolchildren. Having them screaming at the top of their lungs and running around the tiny island isn’t exactly the idea of a soothing island escapade.

Gem Island’s proximity to the mainland, merely 15 minutes by speedboat, adds to its attractiveness as a weekend holiday spot. A blessing definitely for those prone to seasickness.

Though easily accessible, the 1-km long Gem Island has remained exquisitely pristine. It has all the main requisites needed for an island escapade. Sun, sand, beach, clear turquoise sea, as well as clean and comfortable accommodation offered by its only boutique resort – Gem Island Resort & Spa.

It provides the perfect setting to catch up with close pals and great surroundings for a romantic rendezvous. Throwing a birthday party there, or better still, a wedding, would be really fantastic. In a nutshell, it allows us to be away from our daily hectic schedules for a few days to rekindle friendships and relationships.

Gem Island Resort & Spa has been in operation for over 10 years. It underwent a refurbishment and re-branding exercise sometime in 2006. For a tiny island like Gem, its accommodation, all fronting the South China Sea comprising 39 Water Villas, 4 Premier Villas, 4 Hideaway Villas and 2 Hideaway Suite, gives a reason good enough for repeat visits.

Its Water Villas, the least expensive of the bunch, are simple yet highly comfortable. The best thing is the room opens out to a spacious balcony with an amazing view of the ocean. Lazing at the balcony with a book in hand, entertained by the sound of pounding waves with the sea breeze pressed against your face is the perfect way to spend the afternoon. Those who are lucky can even get a glimpse of the black-tip sharks from the balcony early morning. Sadly, my luck is only good enough to spot a huge monitor lizard. Anyhow, love the balcony!

As the resort is island-based, the electricity supply is switched off between 3pm and 5pm daily. Most visitors would be out of their rooms during that time to enjoy the many activities on the island. No holiday in Gem would be complete without basking in the sun and enjoying a swim at its secluded beaches. Other activities include snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, jungle trekking and beach games. Normally, after enjoying all these activities, hitting the spa is probably the next best option. Tusita Spa offers a range of massages and spa treatments that will leave guests de-stressed and rejuvenated.

Gem Island Resort & Spa also plays a part in turtle conservation. The resort has established a turtle sanctuary and works closely with the State authorities to protect turtles. The staff of the resort seeks out turtle eggs on the secluded beaches of Gem and the nearby Kapas Island. The eggs are collected and transferred to the turtle sanctuary for incubation. Young hatchlings are kept in a specially constructed pool near its jetty before being released into the open sea. So, visitors who are lucky might get a chance to release the hatchlings.

GETTING THERE:

Getting to Gem Island is really simple. Both Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia fly to Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur. From the airport, take a cab and head south for Marang jetty (not Merang jetty). The journey is about 45 minutes.

If you choose to drive, the journey from Kuala Lumpur to Marang jetty takes approximately six to seven hours via the Karak and East Coast Highway.
